Throughout my road trips I’ve come across multiple edo style rest stops, one even on the side of a freeway just 1.5 hours away from Tokyo! If you are driving around I highly recommend stopping by one of these. They typically have Japanese food, snacks, ice creams or specialty shops with no foreign tourists around.
Though my experience has been driving past and finding them vs them popping up on google maps.
For example this is the one near Tokyo: 鬼平江戸処 (not pictured in my set)
