The POKÉMON with YOU Train was launched in 2012 by JR East, just one year after the devastating 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The train’s exterior is painted bright yellow and decorated with dozens of smiling Pikachu illustrations. Inside, it gets even cuter: Pikachu-themed seats, Poké Ball motifs, Yellow walls and curtains, and giant plush Pikachu for photo ops. It’s essentially a moving Pokémon playground.
The train has just two carriages, and both are delightful. The Communication Car is the seating car where passengers relax and enjoy the views. The Playroom Car, designed especially for children, features soft play areas, toys and a mock driver’s cab where kids can pretend to operate the train.
