Red Ginger at 2230 Edgewood Rd SW in Cedar Rapids is no more! The popular Cedar Rapids Japanese restaurant has rebranded and is now open under a new name.
What Happened to Red Ginger?
After doing a little digging on social media, it appears that the Cedar Rapids Red Ginger location recently underwent some big changes. The restaurant announced on Facebook back on December 31st that they would be closed beginning on January 1st due to a family emergency, and that they planned to reopen for business on February 2nd.
Red Ginger didn’t post anything on their socials until March 30th, when they revealed that they were ready to begin welcoming customers again. The post read:
“The wait is over! Red Ginger is officially REOPENED.
A huge thank you for your patience and support while we were away. We’ve missed serving you, and the fish is fresh and ready!”
Red Ginger’s final Facebook post came on March 9th, and since then, the restaurant has been quiet. This has caused a bit of confusion for customers, which resulted in a post on the Cedar Rapids Area Foodies Facebook group on April 30th. A user named Marine Moreno Dussuelle wrote:
“Red Ginger – Is it open or closed?
Google says definitely closed, the phone does not pick up. Does anyone know what’s happening there?”
It’s been confirmed that Red Ginger has been listed as “permanently closed” on Google. But, the restaurant isn’t exactly gone for good. A new post in the Cedar Rapids Area Foodies page says that Red Ginger has been rebranded as Sumi Sushi & Skewer!
About Sumi Sushi & Skewer
The official website for Sumi Sushi & Skewer lists 2230 Edgewood Rd SW as its address, which is the same address as Red Ginger, but it does have a new phone number and online ordering system. The number is 319-640-6755, and online ordering can be found HERE.
As far as the menu goes, Sumi’s is very similar to Red Ginger’s, offering “great selection of Japanese cuisine.” Options include sushi & sashimi, hibachi, teriyaki, ramen, stir-fry noodle dishes, and a variety of appetizers. There are also Bento Box lunch special from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. You can check out the full menu HERE.
Sumi Sushi & Skewer is open for business, but they do not appear to have a Facebook or Instagram page yet. The hours listed on their website are:

On April 29th, KWQC reported that the Red Ginger in the Quad Cities has also closed its doors. That’s according to a Facebook post from Izumi Steakhouse in Davenport, another Japanese restaurant in the Quad Cities. The post reads:
“For those concerned, Red Ginger will remain closed. Going forward, we have decided to merge business with Red Ginger. We are bringing the amazing Red Ginger staff as well as integrating their menu items with us.”
Izumi Steakhouse has reopened at 4901 Utica Ridge Rd after a temporary closure. You can check out their official website for more information HERE.
