Hokkaido police arrested a 46-year-old woman Tuesday on suspicion of murdering her 6-year-old son at their home in the city of Sapporo.
The suspect, Yukie Kamii, a self-described part-time worker who lives in the city’s Teine Ward, is accused of strangling her son, Yusho, a first-grade elementary school student, sometime between Monday morning and evening, according to reports by Hokkaido Television Broadcasting.
According to police, Kamii called emergency services at around 7:40 p.m. that day, telling operators: “My child is dead. I killed him.”
Officers who arrived at the home found the boy unconscious and not breathing. He was taken to a hospital in the city, where his death was later confirmed.
Kamii has since denied the allegations, telling police, “I did not kill my son,” despite her initial statement. Her accounts of the incident have been inconsistent, prompting police to conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.
Investigators believe the incident occurred between 6:30 a.m. and shortly before the emergency call was made.
