2026 Spectacular early spring views in Kyoto! Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and Umekoji Park

At Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, the head shrine of all Tenmangu shrines nationwide, around 50 varieties and 1,500 plum trees bloom vibrantly in red and white. In 2026, the “KYOTO NIPPON FESTIVAL” by Mika Ninagawa × EiM features the stunning crystal-shimmering fantastical plum garden installation “The Garden of Light and Flowers,” which is absolutely mesmerizing ✨

The illuminated plum blossoms at night are especially beautiful, with legends like the Flying Plum (Tobiume) associated with Sugawara no Michizane, along with rare black plums and Wakonbai plums making an appearance.

Then head to Umekoji Park near Kyoto Station. Along the “Ume Komichi” path beside the lawn area, about 14 varieties and 140 plum trees release a gentle fragrance. Varieties such as Yae-Kanko, Oobachi, and Tojiume bloom peacefully—perfect for a relaxed stroll♪

The sight of shinkansen trains and steam locomotives passing in the background adds a uniquely Kyoto touch.
