Designer, photographer, and creative director Nicolas Yuthanan Chalmeau

Born in Paris and based in Tokyo, I am a curator, photographer, and the creative director of Galerie 21, a space dedicated to craft culture and objects shaped by time. I have lived in Japan for nearly a decade and founded Sillage, an apparel brand produced exclusively in Japan in collaboration with major factories. I later established a creative agency working with international brands on fashion imagery and storytelling, and went on to open Galerie 21, where antiques and contemporary works coexist through the shared values of durability and meaning. Across clothing, objects, and images, my work consistently explores the traditions of travel and the quiet power of handmade things. —Nicolas Yuthanan Chalmeau, Founder of Sillage and Galerie 21

When eating at a restaurant without an English menu, ask for recommendations.

You will rarely be disappointed. You can simply say “Osusume wa nan desu ka” or “Honjitsu no osusume wa nan desu ka” if you want to ask for the dish of the day.
