At the Michelin Guide Kyoto & Osaka 2026 ceremony held in Osaka on April 23, Kyoto’s Miyamaso was minted as a new three-starred restaurant, marking the first time since the inaugural 2020 edition of the guide that another top-ranked establishment was announced for the city.

The addition of Miyamaso, which is located within an eponymous ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) and offers a seasonal menu based on locally sourced ingredients, brings the total number of three-Michelin-starred restaurants in the ancient capital to six.

Five new restaurants earned two stars: Four in Kyoto — Doppo, Higashiyama Yoshihisa, Muromachi Yui and Tokuha Motonari — and one in Osaka: kaiseki (Japanese haute cuisine) purveyor Teruya.

Nineteen new restaurants — 12 in Kyoto and 7 in Osaka — joined the one-Michelin-starred club, including Kikunoi Sushi Ao (the sushi specialty outpost of the renowned Kikunoi group) in Kyoto and yakitori specialist Torisho Ishii in Osaka. The guide’s Bib Gourmand selection, which recognizes eateries that offer high-quality food at affordable prices, welcomes 12 additions this year.

Miki Tanaka, owner-sommelier of French restaurant Louise in Osaka, was awarded the top sommelier award.
