A flock of Oregon Ducks are headed to Japan this summer, the University of Oregon’s athletic department announced Monday.
Oregon football head coach Dan Lanning and several star Ducks players will be in Tokyo for the first-ever ‘Tokyo Oregon Football Showcase” from June 25-27. The showcase, held at The American School in Japan is focused on introducing 7-on-7 football to Japan.
“The opportunity to represent the University of Oregon in Tokyo is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Lanning was quoted as saying in a press release. “Football has taken all of us to incredible places, and it will be special to connect with players and coaches who love this game as much as we do. We are excited to share how we approach the game and to be part of something that’s much bigger than one trip.”
Football in Japan and Oregon’s place in it
American football isn’t new to the Japanese audience. Japan’s top league, X-League, was founded in 1971. The sport’s traditional 11-on-11 and flag formats are played in the country, but 7-on-7 is a “new concept” for the Japanese market, according to the press release.
Ducks quarterback Dante Moore, receivers Dakorien Moore, Evan Stewart and Jeremiah McClellan; running backs Dierre Hill Jr. and Jordon Davison; and tight end Jamari Johnson will join Lanning on the overseas trip.
The athletes will “conduct a live exhibition,” demonstrating “fundamental skills, core concepts and techniques” of 7-on-7 football. Lanning is leading a coaching clinic as part of the trip, too.
Sneaker retailer Flight Club and Division Street, a sports-marketing company founded for Oregon athletes, are putting on the showcase.
“The Tokyo Oregon Football Showcase continues our legacy of creating innovative programs for student-athletes that are unmatched in the industry,” Division Street CEO Rosemary St. Clair stated in the press release. “This event will be a celebration of how sport transcends borders and creates lasting cultural connections. Our goal is to introduce Oregon athletes and the Duck football brand to Japanese fans and establish a foundation of excitement and fan engagement that we can build on in future years.”
