TOKYO (TR) – Management for a Lawson convenience store in Shinjuku Ward’s Kabukicho district has acknowledged a bizarre incident in which two employees engaged in a violent fistfight behind cash registers, reports News Post Seven (Apr. 25).

The footage, which began circulating on X on April 24, has quickly garnered over 8 million views. It captures two employees clad in Lawson’s signature blue-and-white striped uniforms locked in a fierce physical struggle inside the narrow checkout counter space.

In a surreal scene, as the two clerks grappled and traded blows, a third employee calmly continued to scan items and operate the register, seemingly unfazed by the melee unfolding mere inches away. Another staff member eventually attempted to intervene, but the brawling clerks showed no signs of stopping.

When contacted for comment regarding the workplace clash, a representative for the store admitted the incident occurred, offering only a brief statement: “We are currently investigating. The store is still open. No one was injured. We cannot comment or make a judgment at the store, so please contact headquarters.”

The Lawson branch in question is located near the so-called “Toyoko” area of Kabukicho, a plaza notorious for youth loitering and poor security. Despite the red-light district’s gritty reputation, the 24-hour convenience store sees a constant flow of foot traffic.

“The security around here is definitely not the best, but people are always coming in and out,” a frequent customer told the publication. “A while ago, a video went viral showing a clerk at this exact store using a spray to chase a woman away from the storefront. There are also many foreign staff members working there depending on the shift. Still, it’s shocking to see a real fight break out inside a convenience store.”

With inappropriate employee behavior increasingly causing brand-damaging scandals, the viral brawl has sparked widespread debate online regarding workplace management and training in high-stress urban environments.
