Japan new rules

Japan is changing — here’s what you need to know before your trip 🇯🇵

Save this so you don’t get surprised later 👇

1. Two-tier pricing
Many major attractions are starting to charge tourists more than locals

* some restaurants in tourist areas have higher prices for English menus

2. Shrines & temples
Many were traditionally free
Now even iconic places like Kiyomizu-dera Temple are considering separate pricing for tourists

3. Tax-free system (from Nov 2026)
No more instant discount in stores
→ you’ll pay full price and claim it later at the airport

4. Accommodation tax
More regions across Japan are adding extra fees per night

5. Departure tax increase (from July 2026)
“Sayōnara tax” goes from 1,000 → 3,000 yen
→ already included in your flight ticket

All of this = response to overtourism.

👉 Save this before your Japan trip — it’ll help you avoid unexpected costs.

  1. I think it’s fair, don’t get me wrong tourism is great for any country, but once a country gets too popular/trendy it causes over-tourism. Which brings negative and positive attention, I personally think the negatives do overweigh the positives in this situation. With people wanting to hit it big on the internet nowadays, they go to extreme measures as the standards are so off now. They take advantage of their hospitality. Another thing is many tourist go to Japan because it’s cheaper, paying a bit more doesn’t hurt, if the menu one is that big of a issue there probably a better translator app than Google now so problem solved. By the way, they only implemented the tax refund at airport one to ensure people will use it correctly as I have heard of tourist not use it as intended.

  2. The first point is also good for them, now people will want to avoid first/second cities due to the higher prices and actually support lesser known parts of Japan that actually needs the tourism!!
