Strange system… And then the Japanese wonder about their low birth rate. It's really hard to talk to people when no one wants to talk. 😩
I don't even find the language barrier that bad, because many people speak English quite well. And it has improved in the last 20 years. 🎉
I Hate Things Being Ignored In Japan, That’s Just Because I Want People To Know Things In Japan When They Were Made In Its Home / Native Country
日本人同士でも面倒くさいですよ。景気が悪いので日本人は疲れています。あと近年、外国人による犯罪が日本国内で増えたせいもあって警戒しているのかもしれません
I have nonstop Japanese people talking to me when I walk the dog
Correction: there are places [ you can pay ] for talking.
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING SILENT.SOME PEOPLE HERE IN ENGLAND PEOPLE JUST WANT TO KNOW ALL YOUR BUSINESS THEN HEAR IT AND TELL EVERYONE ELSE.MANY PEOPLE ARE TWO FACED HERE IN ENGLAND CANT BE TRUSTED
being silent is a sign of respect at times holding a conversation in total silence is rather impressive and dignified. plus why don't ppl in JPN don't want to talk to you, mainly because not everything has to do with you, and loud noises from the mouth isn't nice.
They for sure do like to talk but behind a screen where they can remain anonymous. Look at their social media platforms. They’re some of the most toxic people out there 😂
Great video. Those cultural choices make a lot of sense. Making an urban situation peaceful is pretty cool. The USA has a lot more rural aspects which makes us chattier I think. A lot more familiarity with people in small towns.
I think silence is good, but those people selling things on the street don't respect that. It's annoying.
Really enjoy your dives in Japanese culture, thank you JE!
Very interesting video… knowing how the system works is the best way to 1) not do something rude by accident 2) not overthink people's behavior or reaction. So if I ever go to Japan and want to tell a Japanese girl that she's pretty, I first need to go to the same izakaya as her 🤣 But seriously, very useful information here, JE, thanks a lot!
Because im ugly and disabled…😂
Yknow, I've heard people talk about being lonely in Japan, that Japanese don't talk to u etc..and having interacted a lot with Japanese people in my martial arts days, my Judo and Kendo dojos would both host Japanese students pretty often..and what JE is saying is exactly my experience with Japanese folks..no unnecessary talking, unwarranted behavior, they know how to read the room..and, they are very comfortable with silence..sorry, most westerners are just too invasive and noisy. The Japanese understand the 'time and place' of polite behaviour. Love that about them. 🇯🇵❤✨️
As a rude American from super-rude New York I would imagine I would be hated in Japan. Strangely, I have had a couple of really close Japanese friends including one girl who would talk my ears off on the phone for hours. I guess the most puzzling thing is this: how does a guy approach a stranger in Japan that they find attractive? I guess it can only happen in bars or clubs as just approaching some hot woman at a book store or whatever would be perceived as super rude? It's very strange.
Ive travelled to Japan and had no problem speaking and interacting with them.
Yeah sad … All by design … DISCONNECTION …thank you
Its pretty obvious that some people in Japan don't want to have a conversation because many of them are wearing masks.
Speaking of the US, many people have diarrhea of the mouth. We have trains in one city that are supposed to be quiet during certain times and people get into arguments because someone asks them to recognize the quiet area. Is it really that hard to not talk for 30/40 minutes?
And honestly, if you listen to these conversations you'll notice they have absolutely NOTHING to talk about. It's not something that can't wait until they are off the train. It's just because can't shut up.
I know Japan isn't perfect, but it sounds (literally) like heaven.
I spent a whole month in Tokyo on my own, i rented an airbnb. The only interaction i recall was with an old traffic crossing guy when i asked him directions, and a chef cook who asked me about the food i ordered. A month flew by very quickly and i had a lot to keep me occupied, but i think by the final week it was really becoming really apparent how little communication i have had and the final week i was much more observant of the Japanese avoidance, I think the most noticeable thing I was sitting on a full train yet the only empty seat my whole journey was the seat next to me. I remember feeling quite angry about it. Then i started to notice things such as gaisensha trucks and it really made me feel that Japanese avoidance is really unique. I can't remember those things ever happening in New York or Barcelona for example.
Everyone has his business to do and they don't have obligation to serve foreigners who don't directly bring benefits for them. Don't take yourself too seriously. 😏
Everyone are ignored in Big Cities that's how Big Cities are in New York nobody care about you too.
日本人は内面のエネルギーを放出するのが苦手な民族で、これを感情ミュート社会と言います。
How then they get married?
It's simple. Japan is a 'CASTRATED SOCIETY' itself.
There are TWO POWERs in Japan:
1) The vested interests 2) Women
The first, the vested interests.. In politics, bureaucracy, and business, they have inherited an invisible caste system of social hierarchy for generations.
Next, women.. In Japan, men are like public slaves, and power is unilaterally granted to women.
Women can casually enter mens saunas and changing rooms where men are totally naked. Of course, if the genders were reversed, they would be immediately arrested.
In this way, men are treated like animals with no dignity or value.
These two powers (the vested interests + women) that permeate Japan are intertwined, and all rules have been created to benefit these powers.
Initiative or proactive people are excluded from society to prevent them from challenging the cartels of the vested interests.
To prevent any challenge to female dominant society, anything disadvantageous to women or considered masculine will be eradicated from society.
But you know what? This wasn't always the case, until the 1980s, Japan was the complete opposite— A very progressive and masculine society until 1980s.
However, from the 1990s onward, relentless attacks from the power structure (vested interests + women) to Japanese common people created a stifling atmosphere, making it difficult even to breathe.
This negative spiral peaked around 2010.
However, since then the introduction of the internet, social media and external abroad cultures has brought a slight resurgence of Japanese social vitality, which we see today in the 2020s.
Therefore, without overthinking it,
we can simply observe Japan to understand what a society looks like when shaped by the vested interests, suppressed, and ultimately collapsed.
Excellent topic. Enjoyed thank you.
Beautiful Princess 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
The Japanese and the British have very structural forms of etiquette and rules which I personally enjoy as I know where I stand. Other cultures are harder to adapt to when you don't know how to act or know how people expect you to be. In Japan and the UK we both like using alcohol to get loose to show a different personality but we often drink too much! Then you have America where anything goes……
I remember when I went to Korea and said excuse me to a woman (in Korean) to ask for directions. She practically jumped out of her skin. It might have been the first time anyone ever spoke to her in a public setting. And me being a foreigner probably spooked her even more. I kinda became self conscious about interacting with anyone after that. Hopefully I don't have the same experience in Japan.
I love being ignored whilst I quietly go about my business. It is one of the reasons I love Japan. It all changes, of course, after a few drinks in any bar in Tokyo
A time for inner silence
A time for outer noise
Out of time and space Remember your real face Lao Tzu😍Loving What Is
Conscious presence/Awareness awaring itself you are not the Mind
or even the Body…not "Japanese" that is the conditioning…Exploring "consciousness" whatever😉 that is🤣
Blacks in America talk on speakerphone everywhere in public. It’s the most annoying thing of alltime. God bless Japanese values.
Never show face. Doesn’t sound like a japanese
Thanks JE for the video and the cultural insights.
It helps us gaijin understand the culture a bit more. 👍
Very weird country in World.. This is why 30% girls are Single There.. No sex.. No fun, no entertainment, not connect with world media 🤦♂️😐
This was a great video post, JE! I wondered about this subject while I was there last year, so I appreciate the insight. I will be better prepared for my next visit. Best wishes my friend!
You salaryman?
I look forward to going to Japan for the first time. Either next year or the year after. Being an introvert, the silence will be welcome I think. It can feel awkward in the U.S. sometimes. But I hope to take in a lot of the local culture, and book a Smileywalk tour or 2. 🙂
Very good intricate and nuanced observations, everything you said is exactly how it is in Japanese society. Sometimes it's not easy to get used to, but as in the Uk people can also use politeness to avoid interacting too unfortunately.
My experience anywhere is that people are more likely to talk to you if you are travelling on your own. It's just the same in Japan with the added cultural nuances described here.
However Tokyo people are much less likely to talk to me than anywhere else. By comparison with Tokyo, Nagoya people are positively chatty.
Bizarrely other retired people and young people particularly female are the most likely to interact.
Now add a few beers and Japanese people can become very talkative!
Importing disrespectful foreigners isn't helping either! I see why Japan's brith rate is falling.
