The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been in theaters in most of the world for 3+ weeks now, but Japan doesn’t get the film until April 24th, 2026. Universal and Nintendo just held the red carpet premiere for the movie in Japan, and none other than Shigeru Miyamoto dropped by to talk a bit about the project.

Miyamoto wanted those in attendance at the premiere to know that the Japanese version of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie wasn’t just a localization of the English version, but an actual “Japanese version.” Miyamoto went on to explain that the Japanese version of the movie has phrases that are unique to Japan, and that he and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri have been working on the Japanese script from the very start of the project. In other words, seeing the film in Japan could end up being quite a different experience!

In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie the Super Mario brothers are back for a cosmic sequel where the fate of the entire galaxy hangs in the balance. Having thwarted Bowser’s previous plot to marry Princess Peach, Mario and Luigi now face a fresh threat in Bowser Jr., who is determined to liberate his father from captivity and restore the family legacy.

Alongside their loyal companion Toad and the celestial protector Rosalina, the brothers travel across the stars to stop the young heir’s crusade, eventually crossing paths with a friendly new ally, Yoshi. Despite the cosmic pressure, these plumbers prove they can handle any leak in the galaxy’s security—because when things get backed up, they always find a way to flush out the competition.
