TOKYO: Former Japanese Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru met with Tunisian Ambassador Ahmed Chafra in Tokyo on Wednesday and discussed bilateral affairs and Japan’s involvement with Africa.

Japan and Tunisia have close ties and Ishiba, as prime minister, met with Tunisian leader Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri in August last year when she visited Japan to attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama.

Ishiba and Chafra recalled the close relations of friendship and cooperation between Tunisia and Japan, particularly Tunisia’s successful participation TICAD 9 and the Osaka-Kansai World Expo.

The meeting also served as an occasion to exchange views on the positions of the two friendly countries regarding the most recent developments at the regional and international levels.

Ishiba was succeeded as prime minister by TAKAICHI Sanai in October last year. While in office, he announced several initiatives to encourage Japanese companies to move into the African market, including the Indian Ocean-Africa economic zone initiative to contribute to the development of a huge area from west of the Indian Ocean and covering the African continent.
