PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says the complaints regarding the Zambia Police Service recruitment of 4000 people is being addressed.
Mr Hichilema said he scans social media and that he has seen people’s concerns over the issue, which is being addressed “right now”.
Social media has been awash with a lot citizens questioning the alleged ‘secret’ recruitment of 4000 police officers, after an in-house advert leaked on line.
In reaction to pressure, Zambia Police Service, in a statement, said the recruitment was an “in-house” or internal staffing exercise, rather than a public recruitment drive, to fill vacancies created by attrition and retirements.
They said the process focused on transitioning qualified internal civilian staff, utilizing the 2023 waiting list, and recruiting specialists, which prompted public debate regarding transparency-now code-named “data base”.
The President said people’s concerns over the recruitment issue are being addressed because his administration has been transparently recruiting citizens in the public service.
He also said the New Dawn administration is resolved to continue making the economy better to enable create a fiscal space that will allow recruitment of more nurses, teachers, police and other civil servants.
He said this yesterday during the United Party for National Development general assembly which him elected unopposed as the party president and 2026 general election candidate.
“Now, that election, it will allow us to do what we needed to do, so that those families who have a child who has not been employed they will have somebody employed, can be employed, as a nurse or a teacher, or in the private sector,” Mr Hichilema said.
“And I have heard about the issues of police recruitments, we are addressing that issue right now. That’s our job, that’s why you put us into offices, you have heard my message, we are the government that has been recruiting people across the country,” Mr Hichilema said.
He said unless the previous government, the New Dawn has been advertising job recruitments because it believes in giving all Zambians an opportunity to thrive.
“The government before us never did that, you never knew when there was recruitment, you just saw people working, inga aba bafuma kwisa, now you know you can even comment on social media. I scan, check social media platforms, here and there. I see the complaints, I work on them.
“We still have a lot of work to do, the economy is growing, we are creating jobs for more teachers, nurses , more police men, more army officers. More ZAF officers, more national service officers,” the President said.
