HOKKAIDO (TR) – Police in Asahikawa City have arrested a 79-year-old man for allegedly shoplifting three packs of eggs from a local supermarket.

The crime was foiled by an eagle-eyed, off-duty police officer, reports Fuji News Network (Apr. 16).

The incident took place at around 2:10 p.m. on April 11 at a supermarket in the city’s Toyooka district. The elderly suspect is accused of stealing three packs of eggs, with a total retail value of 1,053 yen.

According to police, an off-duty officer who happened to be outside the store spotted the man acting suspiciously, stuffing items into the abdominal area of his jacket. When the officer confronted him, the concealed eggs were discovered hidden inside his clothing.

Because it was initially unclear whether the man had just taken the eggs from the establishment, investigating officers reviewed the supermarket’s security camera footage. After confirming the theft on video, police formally arrested the suspect on April 12.

Upon questioning, the man fully admitted to the allegations. He explained his motive by stating, “I had no money.”

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if the suspect has been involved in any other similar crimes.
