Kumamoto: Kumamoto Station (熊本県: 熊本駅) – Japan Walking Tour

Leaving Omuta behind, I arrived in Kumamoto, the “Land of Fire.” At the station, I was warmly greeted by the famous Kumamon and a character named Maio. While the station area was hushed late at night, I headed toward the city’s heart: the massive arcade districts of Kamitori, Shimotori, and Shinshigai. Despite the distance from the station, the night breeze made the walk feel surprisingly light.

Once inside the arcades, I was stunned by the sea of people—a typical, vibrant Saturday night. Compared to other cities of 700,000 like Niigata or Okayama, Kumamoto’s nocturnal energy felt exceptionally dense. It was an overwhelming display of vitality that defied the typical scale of a regional city, making for a truly captivating after-dark stroll.
