The Sake District Most Tourists Miss in Kyoto
Most travelers visit this area of Kyoto to see the famous shrine, but very few realize that just nearby is one of Japan’s most important sake brewing districts.
Fushimi District has been producing sake for hundreds of years thanks to its soft natural spring water, which is considered ideal for brewing high quality sake. The area is home to historic breweries, small tasting bars, specialty shops, and even a museum dedicated to sake culture.
If you enjoy Japanese food and drink experiences, this is one of the most interesting neighborhoods to explore in Kyoto.
Some places worth visiting in the Fushimi sake district include:
• Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum where you can learn how traditional sake is made and see historic brewing tools and equipment used in the brewing process.
• Fushimi Sakagura Kouji which offers large sake sampler flights so you can try multiple styles of sake in one sitting.
• Ginjo Shubo Aburacho where staff guide visitors through tastings based on flavor profiles and explain how rice polishing levels affect the taste of sake.
Many visitors come to this part of Kyoto to walk through the famous shrine gates, but exploring the surrounding sake district adds another cultural layer to the experience.
Tip for travelers. Many tasting bars in the Fushimi area offer sampler sets so you can try several types of sake before buying a bottle. This makes it a great place to learn the differences between dry, fruity, and rich sake styles.
If you are planning a trip to Kyoto and want something beyond temples and shrines, visiting the sake district in Fushimi is a unique cultural experience worth adding to your itinerary.
