TOKYO: In the wake of heightened danger in the Middle East, the Foreign Ministry is now alerting Japanese citizens to potential risks when traveling to the United States for the World Baseball Classic, with games set for Miami, Houston, Puerto Rico, and Japan.
Although the Ministry stopped short of ranking the United States among its four official danger levels, it sounded the alarm on ongoing threats like murder, robbery, theft, assault, car break-ins, and extortion. Miami, Houston, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, were singled out as especially risky cities.
“While crime rates have declined from their peak, violent crimes such as murders and shootings remain prevalent. Travelers are advised to take standard security precautions, including avoiding walking alone at night or early in the morning and choosing crowded areas when going out,” according to the Travel Safety Department of the Ministry.
Japanese citizens are further advised to “frequently check for warnings from tournament organizers and local authorities,” as well as updates from consulate offices in Miami, Houston, and New York.
