TOKYO: Japanese Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu reconfirmed Japan’s opposition to North Korea’s nuclear program at a press conference on Tuesday, calling it “unacceptable.”

“North Korea’s nuclear missile development is a clear violation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and our country believes that it threatens the peace and security of the region and the international community,” Motegi said.

He said the Japanese government’s position on North Korea remains unchanged and, in cooperation with the international community, it is aiming for the complete denuclearization of North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile development.

“It is not only a serious problem for our country, but also for the region and the entire international community,” he added, saying that it remains a threat to peace and security.

In a speech on Monday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country’s nuclear program is “irreversible” and has pledged to cement his country’s status as a nuclear power.

Commenting on news reports that Prime Minister TAKAICHI Sanae wants to have a summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Motegi said the prime minister is prepared to meet Kim face-to-face, “so that both Japan and North Korea can envision a future where they can enjoy peace and prosperity together.”

He said Takaichi has a “very strong desire to meet Chairman Kim Jong Un directly” and will work to settle issues between the two countries.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has consistently emphasized that his country will not abandon its nuclear weapons, asserting that its status as a nuclear-armed state is “irreversible.”
