(Mainichi/Nobuyuki Yokota)
A “doll memorial service” to express gratitude for “hina” dolls that were no longer needed, broken dolls and others was held on March 3 at Asahikawa Shrine in the city of Asahikawa, Hokkaido. The event is held every year on the day of Hinamatsuri, or Girls’ Day. This year, about 17,000 dolls were brought in. Hina dolls, stuffed character toys and other items were laid out, and a shrine official offered prayers with heartfelt gratitude.
