Originating from Scotland comes the sights and sounds of the 2007 Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland’s capital during the International Edinburgh Festival during August which annually features acts from across the globe who perform on the castle esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. This year’s participants include;
The Massed Pipes & Drums which at this year’s event includes of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, the Royal Corps of Signals, the Black Watch regiment, 3rd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, the 2nd Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles, Scottish Universities Officer Training Corps, the New Zealand’s Auckland Police, from Australia the Royal Caledonian Society and last but not least the Royal Army of Oman, eight bands in all.
More international acts performing at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo include the Taipei First Girl’s Senior High School Honour Guard and Drum Corps in additon to the Fifes and Drums of the Middlesex County Volunteers band from Massachusetts then followed up by the Massed Commonwealth Highland Dancers, the spectacular Imps Motorcycle Display Team from London’s East End, the impressive Russian Moscow Conservatoire, the ever popular Trinidad & Tobago Defence Steel Orchestra and Drums plus the Mounted Band of the Blues & Royals.
The Tattoo finale begins accompanied by the sound of the Massed Military Bands consisting of the Light Cavalry Band, Royal Artillery Regimental Band, the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland (which has now replaced the Lowland and Highland Bands of the Scottish Division) who join with the entire cast to celebrate the Diamond Wedding Anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh joined by the Tattoo Choir providing a truly memorable show.
Recognisable tunes heard at this years Scottish Tattoo include ‘La Boum’ and ‘Everything I do I do it for you’ in addition to the traditonal ending with the Hym for 2007 being a tune called the Barren Rocks of Aden. This is then followed by the Last Post and Lone Piper playing the Crags of Tumbledown. A burst of fireworks then brings the show performance to a close where the grand British Massed Military Bands make their journey down the famous Royal Mile performing the tune Scotland the Brave plus We’re No Awa’ to Bide Awa and the unforgetable Black Bear which traditionally plays at the close of each performance of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
Edinburgh’s Tattoo is full of colour and spectacle with an atmosphere second to none which makes it one of the top events to see during the summer break whether you are a resident to Edinburgh or seeing the show as a visitor from overseas sitting on the grandstands looking over Edinburgh Castle and the City.
There is a Tattoo Shop selling merchandise based on Market Street near Edinburgh’s Waverley Station and Royal Mile within the City Centre where you can buy CD’s, DVD’s and other items from the event which includes recordings of past performances which I would recommend. There’s even a few VHS tapes dating back to the early 1990’s worth purchasing. I would personally recommend the 1997, 2000 and 2002 performances.
I originally produced this video making use of my Hi8 camera I was gifted by a member of the Edinburgh Cine and Video Society. Before I attended the night of the shoot, I sought out the Marketing Manager for the Edinburgh Tattoo, Alan Smith to ask for permission to film a short video of the event.
