Explore Japan’s Heartland: Ueno to Niigata via Joetsu Shinkansen
Begin your journey in Tokyo with a visit to Ueno’s famous zoo and museums, then hop on the Joetsu Shinkansen toward Niigata—a region known for its delicious food, sake, and scenic beauty.
This video introduces the route from Ueno Station to Niigata Station. The Shinkansen platform at Ueno is underground, so allow extra time to pass through the gates. The Joetsu Shinkansen, Japan’s fourth Shinkansen line, fully opened in 1991 and connects Tokyo to Niigata in just about two hours.
After leaving Ueno, the train stops at Ōmiya, then continues through Takasaki and Jōmō-Kōgen before reaching Echigo-Yuzawa, a popular ski destination right next to the station. You can also take the “Tanigawa” train to reach Echigo-Yuzawa.
From there, the train passes through Urasa, offering views of rice fields—Niigata’s pride. The region is famous for its rice and sake, so be sure to indulge. After Nagaoka, you’ll arrive at Tsubame-Sanjo, known for Japanese craftsmanship, and finally reach Niigata Station.
At Niigata Station, use the East Exit for buses and visit the Niigata City Tourist Information Center. From the station, you can walk to the modern Bandai area or cross Bandai Bridge to explore the historic Furumachi district.
Enjoy your journey and discover the charm of Niigata!
