Kyoto Food: Tourist Picks vs. Local Picks

Sora went out in Kyoto with one simple question: do tourists actually know the best places to eat?

The answers were mixed. Some mentioned international chains, others highlighted higher-end ramen or recommended yakiniku spots. While there are no “wrong” choices when it comes to food, not every popular place represents Kyoto’s best local scene.

Kyoto has incredible ramen neighborhoods like Ichijoji, long-standing fried chicken shops near Nijō Station, and some of Japan’s strongest yakiniku culture — in fact, Kyoto has one of the highest meat consumption rates in the country. The key is knowing where to go beyond surface-level recommendations.

Kyoto’s food scene rewards exploration. The best meals usually aren’t the most obvious ones.
