Trying Japan’s Rarest Airport Transfer | Hovercraft

I finally tried the newly revived hovercraft (HOVERDRIVE) in Oita, Japan. It was absolutely worth a ride. I’m not saying it was comfortable, though!

  1. Really cool airport transfer ! But motion sickness is my arch enemy 🙂, so I guess this is not for me.

P.S. Is Oita worth visiting ? I have been to nearby Beppu and loved it there and I wonder if Oita has something "different" to offer ?

  2. Now that was fun! HooverCraft boats have been used for decades, but only recently have they been built larger for commercial use. I have never been on one, but I am sure it would be quite interesting to ride in one of this size. So where are you taking us now….

  3. The trams at Cincinnati – Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) are hovercraft as well, albeit counterweight propelled.

  4. Have seen two travel videos in the last two weeks with hovercraft. Travelled across the English channel on one once way back in 1992/3. Didn’t even know they still existed. They stopped using them across from uk to France as they got cancelled so often because they can’t really travel in rough seas.

  5. That was really fascinating. You provided that special view at the end that helped me visualize the ship in motion. Thank you!

  6. Solo-san! Thank you for taking us on this unique hover boat. I hope you took some motion sickness medicine. It was lovely to see Sunflower Pearl in all her glory… and yes…. I think my fellow STJ fans and I all sang the Sunflower theme song. "Sunflower…." forever! 🙂 Cheers!

  7. I'm so jealous. I had a 3 week business trip in 1986 planned where I'd visit several cities and had plans for hovercrafts and ferries. But, at the last minute, it all got cancelled. Glad I got to ride along with you.

  8. “My butt is losing its soul with every bounce.” Well, that’ll keep the Kappa away, at least. Just be glad your hovercraft wasn’t full of eels. (Bonus points to whoever knows THAT reference.)

Also…GAH!! Not the Sunflower song again! NOOOOOO!!!

  9. Love it! Japan knows how to travel, I swear you guys have every available mode of transportation there! Thanks for a great video STJ 😊

  10. Nice and quick video. Back in 1978, I also took the hovercraft from England to France. It was so bumpy that people were throwing up all over the place. They even gave everyone barf bags. I was okay, but I wouldn't do that again. But, again, that was in 1978, so I wonder if the hovercrafts have become more sophisticated now. However, watching you mention about the bumpiness made me giggle. I would never go on one again, I don't think — hmmm.

  11. That was so exciting! The narration was perfect. I saw the Beppu Osaka Sunflower, she was off in the distance and she was hard to spot. Now, did you get some nice food while in Oita?

  12. There is still a regular hovercraft between Portsmouth & the Isle of Wight in the UK…it’s been running for over 40 years. Also there used to be the Hovercraft museum in Lee-on-Solent nit far away where the big car carrying cross channel hovercraft ended up ( there is still one there)
