Fuji Whisky is looking forward to the start of Sakura season, the blooming season for cherry blossoms, in late March. The company is encouraging whisky lovers to celebrate the season with the Fuji Sakura Sour, a seasonal cocktail designed to complement cherry blossom celebrations in Japan and the United States. The serve highlights the Japanese whisky’s natural fruit character with a floral lift, positioning it as a versatile option for both daytime Hanami gatherings and evening occasions.
Cherry blossom season in Japan marks a period of pause, during which people gather beneath the blossoms for Hanami, the traditional practice of flower viewing.
In Washington, D.C., the same ritual plays out each spring as the Tidal Basin turns pink and draws crowds to experience the fleeting display. Fuji Whisky has drawn a direct parallel between that sense of impermanence and the patience required to produce its spirit.
According to Fuji Whisky, this same period pause is integral to the distillery’s ethos and production methods. One drop of rain takes 50 years to travel from Mount Fuji’s summit to the deep aquifer beneath the distillery. This prolonged natural filtration process gives the whisky what the brand describes as “a singular purity that defines its softness and clarity.”
Official tasting notes from the brand describe the whisky as “balanced and precise, with soft orchard fruit, gentle oak, a touch of honey, and a clean finish, layered yet easy to sip.”
The brand stated: “Like cherry blossom season, it reflects patience, harmony, and respect for time. One is fleeting. The other takes years. Both invite you to slow down.”
The Fuji Sakura Sour was developed to showcase the whisky rather than obscure it.
To make the Fuji Sakura Sour, you will need 2 oz of Fuji Whisky, 0.5 oz of Monin Yuzu purée, 0.5 oz of lemon juice, 2 dashes of Fee Brothers cherry bitters, 3 oz of Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic Water, and a garnish of your choice. The brand recommends Sakura powder dust, dried cherry blossom, or a lemon rose. Simply shake all ingredients over ice and strain into a tall glass.
Fuji Whisky is produced at Fuji Gotemba Distillery at the base of Mount Fuji. The distillery draws from the mountain’s deep underground water sources and employs a range of distillation methods to create blended Japanese whiskies.
The seasonal Sakura Sour launch reflects a broader trend among Japanese whisky producers to align their brands with cultural moments that resonate with consumers in Western markets.
