TOKYO (Kyodo) — Japan has raised its travel alert for Iran to the most severe level, urging people in the country to evacuate, the Foreign Ministry said Friday, as the death toll there rises amid a crackdown on anti-government protests.

The latest move put Iran at Level 4 on the government’s warning scale, while some regions had previously been designated at Level 3, which advises against all travel to the area.

Deaths have surged as protests sparked by economic grievances in late December spread across Iran. Iranian authorities have shut down internet access, making it difficult for outsiders to fully assess the situation.
