Temple of Victory in Autumn Colors | Katsuo-ji 勝尾寺
Katsuo-ji is a historic temple located about one hour north of Osaka, famous for its victory prayers, thousands of daruma dolls, and breathtaking autumn scenery. Founded in the 8th century, Katsuo-ji Temple has long been known as the “Temple of Victory.” Visitors come here to make a wish using the unique “Kachi-Daruma,” a daruma doll available only at Katsuo-ji, recognizable by the large character “Kachi” written boldly on its belly. Following tradition, visitors paint in one eye of the daruma when making their wish. Once the wish is fulfilled, they paint in the other eye and return the daruma to the temple as an offering of gratitude. The vibrant red doruma dolls place on the ground, create a unique and photogenic atmosphere, especially when surrounded by fiery maple leaves in the fall. We visited on December 3, and the autumn foliage was still at its peak. Because of the hotter-than-usual summer, the foliage season was delayed this year. This uphill alleyway showcases all the larger daruma dolls that have been returned to the temple in gratitude. It’s hugely popular with visitors and is considered the most Instagrammable spot in the entire temple.
