In the mountain town of Nagano, Chōen-ji (長円寺) rests quietly among cedar forests 🌲. Come November, the temple’s stone steps turn into a cascade of red and gold — maple leaves 🍁 covering each tread as if nature had rolled out a carpet for the season.

The approach begins at a simple wooden gate ⛩️, framed by branches heavy with color. As you climb, sunlight filters through the canopy, making the leaves glow like stained glass ✨. The air smells of earth and fallen leaves, and the only sounds are the soft rustle underfoot and the distant ring of a temple bell 🔔.

From the top, the view looks back down the stairway — a perfect frame of stone, wood, and autumn fire 🔥. Inside, the main hall is serene, its tatami mats and incense offering a warm contrast to the crisp air outside 🌬️.

Here, autumn isn’t a spectacle. It’s a meditation.
