Guide to DIY Hakone Day Tour
Romans train, mountain train with switchback systems, cable car, ropeway, pirate ship, and bus ride all in one day. This is the Hakone day tour from Tokyo, Japan. To do this, you first need to purchase your Hakone free pass on Cluke. You can use my discount code for extra savings. The pass includes all the rides I mentioned and is valid for 2 days. Your DIY Hakone adventure starts at Shinjuku Station. Take the Odaku line bound for Hakone Yumoto station, which is the last stop. You can upgrade your pass by adding 1,200 yen for the Romans car. This is a faster and more comfortable train with fewer stops, so you’ll arrive in AON sooner. From Yumoto station, take the mountain train up to Gora station. This line climbs steadily up the mountains, offering scenic views, especially during autumn, spring, or early summer. Since the train goes uphill, it uses a switchback system. So don’t be surprised when suddenly it seems to move backward. It’s part of the train’s engineering charm. At Gora station, ride the cable car to Sununzan. And from there, transfer to the ropeway bound for Awakani. You’ll glide over Audani Valley where you can see steaming silver vents from above. Don’t miss the famous black eggs said to add 7 years to your life when you eat one. Continue your ropeway journey towards Togandai or Lake Ashi. From there, board the pirate ship that sails across the lake all the way to Hakone Machi. Once you dock, head to the Hakone shrine for that iconic photo at the red Tory gate by the water. The line can get quite long during peak seasons, but it’s worth the wait. If you still have time, you can explore the area before taking the bus back to Hakone Yumoto station. You can complete this aon loop in one day or if you prefer a slower pace, stay overnight near Lake Ashie. Something I definitely plan to do next time. It must be amazing to wake up surrounded by the mountains and the lake view. Save this idea for your next Hakone adventure. [Music]
