Sunrise Walk in Historic Harbor Town on Seto Inland Sea | Mitarai, Japan

Dawn walk through quiet streets of historic Townscape of Mitarai, a small port town on the Seto Inland Sea in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. There was a surprising amount of insects and crickets in this town, which combined with the gently lapping waves on the seaside to create a peaceful morning soundscape. I hope you the morning wherever you are out there.

  1. This little port town is quiet this morning, but at one time it was a vibrant port where sailors stopped for rest and entertainment a day's sail from Osaka. The town is on Osaki-Shimozima, a small island off the mainland coast of Hiroshima Prefecture. These days the island is accessible using a series of short bridges, and also by ferry. Interestingly, the island 500 meters to the east, Okamura Island, is part of Ehime Prefecture as the prevailing currents link it more closely to Shikoku than Hiroshima. The town has many noteworthy historic sites, including Japan's first clock shop, a number of residences used by powerful clans in different eras, and the iconic Mitarai Lighthouses. I hope you enjoy the morning wherever you are.
