Is This Hidden Japanese Bakery Worth the Trip?

Today we’re taking you to a bakery you probably haven’t heard of. It’s hidden on a hill in Yokohama, just outside Tokyo. Locals love it and once you see what they’re baking, you’ll understand why. Welcome back to Tabby Eats and welcome to another episode of the Great Japan Bakery Hunt. Today we’re going to be checking out a place called Okano U Bakery, which literally means bakery on a hill. This place is located in Yokohama City. Just a short bus ride from Tama Plaza station and get off at the Himoki Yato and walk four minutes. Yeah. Anyway, we’re super super excited to try the breads from here. Wow. Okay, first of all, this bakery is located on a hill in a residential neighborhood. It’s so pretty. And wow, this bakery is so nice. It looks like a a dreamland. It really does. Okay, let’s get some bread. So, we’re going to get one of the croissant. I always judge a bakery by a croissant. And I love salt bread. And I want this uh baguette chocolate. The salami and cream cheese baguette. So pretty. That’s the most popular one. The egg tart. Wow. Egg tart. I want milk butter. This one. Okay. Sure. Look at all these fruit types. You got chestnut, musc. That’s a different peach. White peach. And then we got a pineapple. Which one should we get? No. And the kettle b. All right. Here’s the bread. This is the bread we got. Oh, so excited. So, we are in this bakery and sitting at the last seat. What a beautiful shop and atmosphere is so nice, so cozy. I want to stay here for hours. Bread. Every bread looks so yummy, beautiful looking. All of them are freshly baked. This is salt bread. Look at this cute bread. And on top it’s saltakimas. Looks really good. Outside crusty, inside it’s fluffy, nice firmness. Also, it’s a nice chewiness. Look at this salt flavor and buttery flavor is really beautiful. It’s really beautiful. And I bought coffee okano blend so comfortable. And next one is kasam. This is very beautiful. This layer is amazing. M. What a beautiful tea. Outside’s crispy and light and inside the buttery flavor is so good and the center part is little moist. The combination of the crispiness and this moistness is fabulous. This kasam amazing. I just had a bite of the salt bread and the croissant. Perfection. This is the Hokkaido edam mame and bacon faukatcha. Look at that. It looks so delicious. So much adamame on top. M. Wow. First of all, the texture of the faukatcha. Wow. The service is cheesy, but the bottom of the fukaja is crispy. So, you have this textural difference. The inside is um soft, and then the the mamame flavor and the smokiness of the bacon combined so well. And of course, here’s cheese. I think there’s a little bit of um mayo. Sorry, that’s not mayo. That’s actually cream cheese. So, you got like cream cheese, you got like maybe parmesan cheese. Lots of flavors and textures going on. Really delicious. So, here is the next one. This is the salami and cream cheese baguette sandwich. Look how beautiful that is. I can’t believe it. And the the baguette looks so crusty and fresh. So, you got five slices of salami. You got lots of uh cheese in there. You got a piece of lettuce. M. You guys hear that crunch? The beet is so fresh and crusty. Wow. Salami has a little bit of kick. It’s spicy once again. Really nicely seasoned and goes so well with the creamy cream cheese. It’s a little bit peppery as well, too. M. This is also really good, guys. This bakery is so beautiful. Like seriously, when I was in there, I had such a hard time to not buy everything. Like everything looked like jewels to me. And this garden, look at this. It’s so peaceful and quiet. This is the roast chicken and carrot lap baguette sandwich. Okay. Oh my god. I don’t know which one I like more, the salami one or this one. This one’s also super flavorful. Chicken is seasoned so well. I taste like maybe a little bit of cumin. The carrot salad is perfect. They’re sliced thin. It’s like tossed in some kind of dressing. The lettuce is super fresh. The baguette of course is crusty, chewy on the inside. That is amazing. This is my favorite type of bread. This is milk butter. Inside there are lots of milk cream. And this one is made with milk and butter. And this bread that it’s rustic type of bread. This cream has a nice buttery and milky taste. Sweetness level is less than I imagined. So I can enjoy the milk and butter flavor as it is really nicely. And the bread nice chewiness outside of course it’s crusty also I can enjoy the bread taste means flour flavor really nicely yeah it’s combined really very good and this one is called chocolate bucket chocolate between this bucket so it’s a sandwich inside there are three slice of chocolate and two serves of butter you using different type of chocolate, milky one and dark one. The bitterness and the sweetness of chocolate combined very nicely. But I want to say the combination with butter. But butter has a little bit of saltiness and it has a fat. It’s enhance this chocolate flavor so nicely. Of course, bread is crusty, chewy, nice texture. I love this. Okay, so we’re going to finish off with some sweet bread. So, we got three and one because we heard this one is the best seller. So, let’s start with the egg tart. Okay, by the way, what are you drinking? Oh, that’s right. I completely forgot about my drink. So, I got their uh royal milk tea and it is delicious. This one is like um they’re using um stronger spices than usual. Actually, usually they don’t add spices. So, this kind of like a almost like a slightly chaiish milk tea, which I love. Delicious. Okay. All right. So, egg tart. Let’s start with this. So, we both love eggtart and this is the number one bestseller at this bakery. And this one immediately caught my attention. We both love eggtarts. Wow. Look how custardy it looks and it’s so flaky. Beautiful. M. Wow. As soon as you bite into it, like the layers of pastry sort of just disintegrates into your mouth. So caramelly as well. This custard is so good. Nice egg taste. Sweetness, it’s just right. So creamy. It’s basically texture. Oh my gosh. All right, so we got two fruit tarts. This one’s seasonal. Yeah, this one is a chestnut fruit tart. Look how beautiful that is. They actually had like five different ones. Five or six, I think. Right. So, this is a seasonal uh grape. Uh this is a shiny mascot tart. So, you’re going to go for the chestnut? I’ll go for the chain. Okay. Can I I cannot I know. I don’t know how I’m going to eat this. That’s like a whole chestnut. Yeah. Whole chestnut. Okay. Here we go. Incredibly flaky. My goodness. This cream still I couldn’t reach to the chestnuts as it is. The cream. The chestnut cream. And maybe they use rum a little bit. Rum, I think so. Okay. So, I I think it’s time to switch, you know, cuz I love rum. What was this? So, lightly. That one has custard. Okay. My favorite time. M. My goodness. This definitely has rum. It is just so beautiful. Look at all the cream inside. There’s that rum cream. You got the chestnut cream. You have like a whole chestnut on the top. You also have chestnut on the inside. And look at the layers of the pastry. Look, this custard inside and chai mascato and cream. This bakery is a great magism of radius. I was just going to say that. I was going to say they are like magic. It’s like magic. Seriously. Oh, these are like probably like the best charts I’ve had in Japan, period. So, we got this one. It’s called shatene. And they recommended this. They said they always sell out. And this particular bread, I’m not really sure what it is, but it’s like a Danish type of bread. Um, they’re using like cream and I think butter as well. And chestnuts. Chestnuts. Chestnuts powder inside. Chestnut powder. Chestnuts and chestnuts powder inside. Okay. So, they say you can eat it like this, but you can also slice it and toast it at home. But since we’re here, we just have to kind of eat it like this. I just noticed it is crusty. It is got Danish bread. I can see a bit of chestnuts. I can see lots of chestnut in there. Wow. Like I did not expect that. That is softer than I expected. And denser than Japanese regular shoo. Y that sweetness of chestnuts are so good. The natural sweetness of chestnut. Natural sweetness. No wonder they sell out. Oh, that is amazing. What was like your favorite of everything we tried today? We tried 11 types of bread today. Was it 11? It’s very difficult. There’s so much more to try from this bakery. Of course, it’s amazing. One of the best croissants I’ve had. And milk. That was I really love the salami sandwich, but then the chicken sandwich is really good, too. Also, I like this one. Me too. Me too. Um, also my favorite one, one of my favorite top is um, this uh, chestnut tart. This one is incredible. At first we’re thinking, is it worth coming all the way down here for bread? I got to say yes. Yes. Like some of the best bread I’ve had in my life. If you come to Japan, it’s a short excursion from Tokyo, but it’s worth it. Yeah, it is. Um, if you’re a bread lover. Yeah. Yeah. And you know, you can take a side trip here and then after this you can go to Yokohama. Yeah, I cannot say enough good things about this place. This is definitely one of my favorite bakeries in the KTO area, not Tokyo, because we are in Yokohama, but oh my gosh, it is so worth coming here. I’m not a bread lover, but I fell in love this bakery. The every bread was amazing. It really, really was. Yeah. He says he’s not a bread lover, but he does love good bread, you know. I think I said that in the first video. Mhm. But good good bread you love. So you’re not necessarily like a bread lover, but you’re like a good bread lover. Yes. Yes. Yeah. Anyway, thank you so much for watching, guys. Really hope you enjoyed this one. Hope you are enjoying this uh bakery hunt series of Japan. Uh stay tuned for another one coming real soon because we’re going to be searching for good bakeries all over the country. See you next time. Bye-bye. [Music]

  12. I have been binge watching your videos because I’m planning a trip to Tokyo in November. Your videos are amazing and I love your energy! I have been especially interested in the last couple of bakery videos. I noticed though that sometimes when I put in the name of a bakery or some other thing you suggest, google maps can’t seem to find it. I’m thinking it’s having a hard time translating? Idk but I sure would love to know how to find some of these restaurants and bakeries you’ve been showing. Thanks!

  13. Thank you for the introduction.

I'm thrilled to see it turned into such a wonderful video.
Please stop by again when you're in the neighborhood.

We'll be waiting for you with delicious, freshly baked bread.
