What It’s Really Like to Climb Mt. Fuji! #japantravel
I just climbed Mount Fuji and it was easier, cheaper, and less crowded than I expected. So, if it’s not on your travel list because you’ve heard otherwise, here are five things I hope will change your mind. Number one, the coolest souvenir in all of Japan, a hiking stick you can get stamped as you make your way up the mountain. Number two, it’s super easy to make friends. I started out alone and ended up meeting three other Americans before I even made it to the trail head. Number three, the trail is very well marked and there are rest stops the whole way up, complete with bathrooms, snacks, and plenty of drinks you can buy in case you didn’t pack enough. Number four, you can do the entire hike in a day without having to stay in a hut on the mountain or waking up super early. We started around 8:00 a.m. from the fifth station and we’re down by 3:30. And number five, it’s affordable. About $27 for the pass for the park, $20 roundtrip bus fair, and $30 for a hostel dorm bed in Kawa Guuchiko, the main town at the base of Mount Fuji.
