  1. not just japan sadly 😒 they dont want small business owners to exist so they can monopolize

  2. japan is very lucky to be protected by their gov for so long, now then they are starting to feel the growing effects of late stage capitalism and mass immigration..

  3. I was lucky enough to go to Osaka recently and loved these so much! I got to see so many little artisan shops and markets and unique restaurants in one place. Living in the U.S., so much of our small businesses have been meticulously taken out by monopolizing chains, so it was so lovely to experience a shopping district and just see locally owned shops. I hope that these continue to survive for a long time ❀

  4. No matter the demand…it's money that talks..And if owner of the land can make more money by developing the land…Then it's "bye bye" shops.

  5. Community will always exist, it is encoded into humans. Capitalism is not as organic as building space w your neighbors.

  6. They will build small shops that are operated by the same company. Different shop same suppliers, same developed to sell the nostalgia. It will be there but corporate owned

  7. It's funny how I recognize a lot of the locations I saw except Tokyo. Hopefully, everything goes OK, so i can go soon. They need to keep them honestly if possible japan will not be the same if they all go away.

  8. Some Shotengai look decent enough but most are long due for a makeover. I fully on board with small businesses and organic bottom-up communities, but honestly the reason these places are going extinct is that their goods are not that competitive and much of them are just resold generic brands you could find on Taobao or Aliexpress. I do hope they are reimagined to be greener and more modernβ€”they definitely have a place as outdoor plazas, especially in the rain and heat.

  9. Happens world wide. Small stores can't compete with gigatic international chains that can run a store in an area on loss by having way way lower prices the the competition for very long time until the competition goes away

  10. I loved these shopping streets in japan. I went through a bunch of them when I was in Osaka. I wish we had something similar in the US because our strip malls aren't the best. Plus small business here dying here because of monopolies.

  11. people love to go on an on about how much they love and "support" local small businesses, but will instantly balk at the idea of paying more than what they would at walmart or amazon.
