A cheap rental option for umbrellas actually makes a lot of sense! Looking back on my past trips to Japan, I've had to buy a cheap umbrella each time but it's so wasteful! Being able to rent one for 140 yen is great!
Don't rent the umbrella. Any convenient store has them for 500 yens to the most expensive at tourist hot spot 700ish yen. It's actually must harder to find those spot to rent than a kobeni! 😂
Or you could just walk into any convenience or drug store and buy an umbrella for a couple bucks. And then I “forget” it in my final hotel room or leave it the umbrella stand that almost every hotel has. Also many hotels have umbrellas that guests can borrow
Just a couple of suggestions after being in Japan in summer. Rental umbrellas are absolutely awesome BUT u have to change your region in App Store to Japan so I couldn’t do that. ChargeSPOT I was so prepared BUT after my phone died I couldn’t use it because to rent I need to scan the QR code which feels like a little bit of a design flaw 🥲 had to buy a power bank that day to charge my phone only to find out there was one right outside the store I was in 😅 Lockers- I avoided them thinking they where expensive but they where pretty cheap but only issue is when you put your stuff in the locker you also have to go back to get it so when you get tired after a whole day of shopping you gotta walk all the way back to whichever exit or entrance you put your bag in – can’t use the nearest exit you see. I have not used e scooters there coz yes trains are packed but mostly only in the mornings. I had to go to school and absolutely dreaded the morning rush BUT if you have your place close to some major stop – only 1 or 2 stops will be packed. You will notice a difference as soon as those are done 🤌 Anyway I love Japan and I miss it so much
Rental ebikes and scooters can be seen lining the bottom of lake fronts here in American cities. I can't imagine how long rental umbrellas would last and where they'd end up.
Japan is a country where you can leave your wallet full of cash in the middle of the street and no one will steal it. But put your umbrella in an umbrella stand for 2 seconds and it's gone. So just do what the locals do, just pick up any random umbrella lol

Not sure about the scooter at the end? Like everywhere is so packed that I don’t think I’d feel comfortable riding on one to zoom around the place 😅

You could, wait hear me out, be like a local, and steal an umbrella
Scooter tutorial please. As a visitor I would be too nervous to use one but I'm still curious about it.

E-scooter is the new idea I haven't thought about. Thank you this.
