Okayama: Customizing our own Japanese Denim Jeans and visiting Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter
Early start for a long journey to Okayama. Enjoying onigiri for breakfast on the go. Visiting a new prefecture has always been on our Japan travel “bucket-list” just gotten off the train and now waiting for the bus bound for Okayama Castle Such a peaceful place. A welcome change from the crazy energy of Tokyo and Osaka Jogging to stay warm in the freezing cold. Haha! 😆 Osaka Castle is also known as “Crow Castle” due to its black exterior. waiting for the bus going to the Betty Smith Factory We’ve travelled 2 hours from Osaka to make custom jeans in Kojima, the birthplace of Japanese denim 🤍 Look, there’s the Betty Smith logo! We’re early for our 11am workshop, so we’ decided to check out the museums first. It’s a Sunday, so no one’s working at the factory. Waiting for our turn. We’re so excited 🤍 You can choose the style of jeans first within your size. Next, you choose the rivets and button for your jeans. The final choice is the back patch. Then you proceed with attaching the rivets and button using a pedal-driven machine from the 1970s. It’s our turn! We’re being moved to a different room. Since English isn’t spoken here, we’re communicating primarily through body language. The designs include regular straight and slim straight. For women’s you can also choose wide pants or a long skirt. Bea chose wide pants. Benz opted for regular straight cut. Then they mark the hem for each custom pair of jeans. We really took our time picking out the rivets, buttons, and patches. so hard to choose :)) Time to put the button ~ the easier part Putting the rivets is a bit more challenging. I was struggling to punch the rivets through this heavy denim, so I needed Benz for an extra push 😅 Finishing touch: Sewing the denim patch Final fit check! So happy to have experienced customizing jeans from the same place where Japanese denim originated. Such a fun experience 😊 Lucky we got the chance to ride the denim bus to Jeans Street. blue ice cream break 🙂 Bye, Kojima! TIme to head to our next stop. We are starving at this point. Food is okay, but the view is 💯 Time to check out the shops while they’re still open. You are beautiful, Okayama 🤍 It’s our last full day in Osaka before heading back to Manila 😞 Going for a good coffee and last minute shopping. We’ve heard so much about Glitch Coffee, we had to try it for ourselves! Sad that we’re leaving. Can’t wait to go back! Thanks for watching our Japan travel vlogs! We started silent vlogging as a way to heal and appreciate life’s beauty. Hope you enjoyed this trip as much as we did. Sending light and love! See you on the next one <3
Okayama was the perfect finale to our Japan travel vlogs! We started with a visit to Okayama Castle and then had this unforgettable experience making our own jeans at the Betty Smith Museum in Kojima, the birthplace of Japanese denim. We even walked down Jeans Street, where everything was blue! We finished our trip with a stroll through the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter and Ivy Square, and of course, we had to grab a coffee at Glitch before leaving Japan. We can’t wait to go back! What was your favorite part of our trip? 😊🤍
