WEIRD thing Japan is Blaming Tourists for

japan is blaming foreigners for this problem right now it’s super cheap to travel to Japan and that means tourists are coming in droves and while there are some people who behave badly Japan is also blaming foreigners for this weird issue i can’t make this up they think we’re eating too much Japanese food japan is going through a big shortage in rice japanese people eat rice with just about every meal but there’s this media narrative that foreigners are buying up and eating all the rice now as the whitest American in Japan who eats other things besides rice I haven’t bought rice in a long time and I just can’t imagine tourists shoving bags of rice into their carry-on luggage but it’s not just rice Japanese people are complaining about in Kyoto tourists completely bought out stores selling matcha tea in less than 15 minutes after opening so Japanese people are holding a grudge against foreigners that don’t leave any product for locals to buy and driving up prices with the high demand and unlike the rice I think this matcha example is totally on the tourists while I do think that completely buying out stores is a bit selfish I hope foreigners don’t become the scapegoat for every problem in Japan so what do you think

Is this blame on tourists to Japan justified?

  1. I doubt that either is true. Scapegoat the people who are seen as outsiders is very typical human nature and standard propaganda.

  2. It's always on Kyouto 😭 I can't blame people on Kyouto for having beef with us, but I don't understand why would the rest of Japan follow up

  3. Okay so the narrative keeps changing. People are get annoyed with Americans for never leaving the US but we're also the problem with over tourism? Are we infesting or are we un-traveled and uncultured? Pick an insult and stick with it. 😂

  4. Yeah I would blame us US citizens too. When locals complain it’s for a reason. They know their land best

  5. sounds like their economy is going in the tank , this was never an issue before and Tourism is down worldwide

  6. I'm half Japanese, but live in the US… rice is heavy, unless you want to pay for overweight fees, tourists are not taking that much rice home 😅

  7. Japanese people are just fucking racist lets be real. Been there twice, love it but my god if we talked like that about foreigners in Denmark or Norway where I live, we would be lynched lol

  8. Dear Japan,

Wow, I never realized how “American” you are!

Soon, maybe you’ll be deporting foreigners to El Salvador too.

    That’s we started in America!

    Well done, Japan!

PS: If you want to speed up the process, we can send Donald Trump to help you!

  9. More Japanese rice is being exported overseas due to the weak yen and its superior taste. In the U.S. market, consumers now have a wide variety of "Koshihikari" rice to choose from. It's not about foreign tourists stuffing their suitcases with rice anymore—haha!

  10. And what makes it so bad is that Japan is sitting on a literal fuck load of rice. But refuses to touch it since it wasn't grown in Japan. They literally let the rice go bad so they can use it as feed for their animals instead of feeding to the people while it's still good.

  11. Tbh i think they should restrict the level of tourism a bit if it’s distressing the indigenous Japanese so much that they are believing in rice conspiracies.

  12. globally rice production was hit hard in a few places in the recent years from natural disasters and or war stuff

  13. I had a group of clapping grandmas when I went and told another tourist in Osaka to get tf off of some ancient statue. He was scottish as well as i am so i took great offence 😂😂

  14. Japan can do what they want. Foreigners need to understand boundaries. Even this video seems to ignore the point they are making- too much consumption, disruptive behavior from people who much different then they are. It may seem toxic but perhaps this is their way of saying we want it to tone down. We should respect that

  15. I'm from southeast Louisiana and French creole and most of our dishes have rice in it and it wasn't until I was 13 I found out that rice isn't a staple food in the rest of America😂

  16. I'm not Japanese and I'm rarely a tourist to anywhere, but I understand how tourists can create a lot of resentment.

I live in Alaska. Certain areas where I live get absolutely swamped by tourists.

The resentment is less a testimony to their purchasing habits than it is a testimony to tourists' behavior.

The worst tourists? Pretty much in this order, by consensus…

Anchorage-ites, Chinese, and Lower 48 Americans.

Certain Chinese easily qualify as the most rude, but they're readily offset by the most of them who are among the best well-mannered.

By the way folks, tourism does Alaska no favors. The business is dominated by multinational corporations, pays poorly, and inhibits the development of Alaska.

  17. Don't worry. Japan's insistence on racial and cultural purity will eventually mean there's no one in Japan at all. Rice for everyone and no one.

  18. Also, tourists pay less in sales tax than residents. Many locals are upset about that too

  19. Western foreigners don't care about rice. Chinese foreigners on the other hand? Yeah, they'll horde that shit.

  20. Japanese people are not blaming foreigners for rice shortage. That's media spreading false rumors

  21. I mean in the us we blame other states when a product is out of stock, my mom says those darn tourists think pineapples are a luxury, because the pineapples were sold out

  22. Remember everyone, Japan is just as racist and xenophobic as the states are. They're just more polite to your face about it.

  23. It's classic government blaming instead of fixing the issue when they were alerted to the issues. Not just Japan, every government does this in some aspect or another. But tourism does have its own headaches like the store bulk buys agian that happens everywhere.

  24. Actually…i would blame the store…anyone would go out and buy stuff to try or consume from the stores if they were to be able to travel to another country if someone is sliding like a whole shelf of product into their cart (which i bet nobody is, matcha is popular so a buncha people are gonna wanna try "authentic" matcha, it's not just one person evilly twiddling their mustache stealing aal the matcha) a store can set a limit on hoe much product they have and how much they set out when…

  25. Lea — Holy…wow! Your comment section is a mess targeted by bots and pol msg actors. Had to be a highly popular, chosen topic for the election.

I’m an expert on US digital politics and never thought I’d see the kind of misinformation we experience from Japan related EN content. The far right party in Japan just made gains and I can see why using the same tactics which worked worldwide on social media.

No wonder the tourism backlash is ongoing not just over rice but attached to a variety of other subjects. Isolationism and pre WWII thinking are coming for every developed 1st world country benefiting from the global system through social media. Will explain much of the comments and reactions you see on your posts sounding like a look-a-like of anti gov, anti modern social change, Rogan-esqe, MAGA others blame anger you notice in the US.
