Japan Food Guide! 60+ Food Spots, 8 Cities, 100+ Dishes (with Prices) Ramen, Bakeries, Street Food
Hi! We’re Pablo and Martín and this is everything we ate during our one-month trip through Japan. Food has always been a big part of how we travel— t’s how we connect with a place, with people, its traditions and with each other. And Japan has always given us so much. From bakeries and coffee shops to ramen and konbini snacks, we started down south in Kyushu and made our way through Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo. In this video, everything’s sorted into categories so come eat your way through Japan with us. Let’s begin! No better way to start than with ramen We are in Japan’s Official Ramen Capital, after all. You can see the menu on your cell phone while you wait We were seated next to a very friendly person 🙂 We ordered the special set! Ramen + Gyoza + Beer You can buy one to prepare at home! This chicken ramen shop is one of our favourite places! Always lots of tickets The portions are huge Perfectly crispy chicken This is Sara udon It is deep-fried Chinese noodles topped with thickened ingredients Noodles are deep-fried so that’s why they’re crispy It also has stir-fried vegetables along with seafood or pork Japanese food is always delicious—even fast food
maintains a high standard of quality We’re in the mood for some soba This place offers some other dishes as well as Soba This is the hot Soba with Tempura A comforting dish, both hot and cold We’re having tsukemen! ramen with the broth on the side You order with the machine! Waiting for our order This ramen has a fish broth You dip the noodles in the broth We’re trying the famous Kumamoto-style ramen! This spot is very casual Kumamoto ramen has fried garlic chips and garlic oil The broth is richer and fuller We came here for its sardine tsukemen The dipping broth, made with dried sardines, was rich We’re going to ‘im donut?’, we saw there’s a new one here in Shibuya so we’ll check it out There’s always a big line outside! Selection here is extremely big! donuts have been obtained! Now we must find a spot to eat them We wanted to have a picnic in the park The chocolate cream was so good! We even visited the Fukuoka branch! Another amazingly decorated bakery in Japan The variety is making us drool There are even savoury donuts! The best unboxing Last piece We got in line at 10am (it opens at 11) This was our most awaited (bakery) moment The moment those doors opened, we grabbed a bit of everything. we just went for whatever caught our eye. We grabbed so much stuff we couldn’t even track prices correctly After trying to visit in other cities (Fukuoka, Kyoto) And after waiting in line for hours Finally trying was a personal win for us Liked it so much we came back again! Our haul was even bigger the second time That is their handwritten menu! They give you a piece of paper and you write your order We couldn’t film inside, but everything looked delicious and we secured the bag We will eat our bread right next to the sea Translating the descriptions but, it honestly doesn’t matter You know our vibe: cozy bakery It was almost closing time so selection was not as varied! We also ordered coffee as we read it’s amazing! sweet potato filling We had been ogling this mini croissant bakery for days now You choose 5 out of 3 different flavors! We love the tray system in bakeries Everything looks so good! Let’s choose This one looked unique! There’s a nice garden to eat your bread All done! We saw this bakery on a YouTube video actually! We chose some baked goods that we remembered seeing on their video Deciding which one to try first A curry bread! A tangerine roll with custard cream Last but not least: a pain suisse We are heading to the next place, luckily it is nearby These bakeries are popular because a lot of items are gone! They are famous for their bagels …but this honey toast really caught our attention The branding is really cute We also got the salted butter melonpan Needless to say: it was heavenly This is one of the prettiest bakeries we have ever visited We couldn’t resist trying some of these We’ll save the bread for later Komeda’s is our favorite diner in Japan Their breakfas promo: buy one coffee and get bread + red bean paste is what’s keeping us coming back We love this place so much we visit multiple times We also visited in Fukuoka! We wanted to share one dessert but the waiter brought two! One of the most famous conveyor belt budget sushi places! We came to the flagship Kura Store in Harajuku This restaurant is bigger so it can be faster to get a seat It is a perfect place to share with friends! Kura is one of those chains we keep coming back Everything’s fully automatized We love this place We love that they keep coming in! Not a bad haul And some dessert Did we win? no A well-known, classic, gyudon place We love japanese curry This chain is available worldwide It tastes so good and comforting We believe this places defines “comfort food” This place is popular! we had to queue for a bit. You grill your own meat here! Which is something we love We enjoyed the DIY aspect of it Fire’s extinguished, meal is over We can never get enough cream puffs! their cream puffs are light, crispy, and filled with rich, custardy cream we have some every time we see a branch And because one dessert is never enough, This diner is similar to Komeda’s they’re also known for their drip coffee Leave it to Japan to have so many breakfast options This place is known for their tonkatsu, served with freshly ground sesame
and a special house sauce There is always a queue but it moves fast Not only is it delicious, it’s also really easy to get to since it’s right by Kyoto Station They give you these instructions to show you how to eat it You first grind the sesame seeds Then you add your favorite sauce 🙂 You also get unlimited miso soup and rice We are in Kichijoji Sunroad These Pokémon donuts were sold out everywhere, so we couldn’t resist buying them The box also has a Pokemon design We are taking these back with us to the hotel This place has a unique take on burgers everything has a Japanese twist, like rice burgers and teriyaki burgers The ingredients are fresher and higher quality than most fast food. We recommend it if you want something different from the usual fast food We love that you can order with a tablet Yoshinoya is another Gyudon chain The person next to us was mixing everything into a bowl, so we did the same 🙂 Nishiki Market, also known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen” We will wander through the stalls and grab whatever catches our eye. We love Japanese sweet potato! I think we found our next snack! Egg for breakfast is always a good idea Is our next snack here maybe? Snoopy-shaped taiyaki! Sharing but it’s now gone This fried seafood stall caught our eye Found the next snack! We wanted to try more unagi (eel) Definitely invest in good quality eel as its worth it! We want to buy prepared food at the supermarket! As we’ve heard it’s of great quality Instead of a convenience store Salads because healthy Who doesn’t like to browse through the aisles? One thing to do in Beppu: try steamed street food And, of course, ice cream! We love Cremia ice cream! It is our favorite when in Japan This area recreates a 17th-century castle town complete with traditional-style buildings and a lively atmosphere. We’re here to try horse meat Food has been acquired! Horsemeaet mince was quite flavorless, actually And now for dessert A street lined with shops selling souvenirs and local treats Umegae Mochi! rice cake with azuki bean filling, is a local specialty We want a peanut and matcha mochi! It was gooey Vendors really know how to catch your attention A good takoyaki is perfectly crispy on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside It’s really hot Let’s look for another snack, we already have something in mind 🙂 Osaka is so lively! During our last trip, we kept seeing this place everywhere, but we never tried it.
This time, we finally did We got some steamed buns and some dumplings First is their really popular pork steamed buns Soft, fluffy dough and juicy, savory filling Next is the shūmai, also super popular and beloved by locals! The pork filling is rich and juicy, We regret not trying them before We are having matcha ice cream melonpan! We tried this place last time and we loved it We came back for our ice cream melonpan This is like a dejavu We couldn’t find a lot of street food in Kurokawa! We ordered some taro and horse meat croquettes In Japan, when something is fried, it’s always perfectly crispy and golden This sauce is sweet and savory with a rich umami flavor This was the last ikinari dango they had, we’ll have to share It is a Kumamoto specialty, a chewy rice flour dumpling filled with sweet potato and red bean paste One small dessert and now we are ready for the next onsen No japanese day trip is complete without a quick stop at the convini We grabbed some caffeine to recharge Japan really knows how to mix things up when it comes to drinks, like this Coca-Cola with fiber! A convini is perfect for a quick, tasty drink on the go We got a free hand towel with our purchase 🙂 We had a convenience store haul after hiking up Mt. Takao! We are true fans of melonpan Nature in Japan is beautiful, and we were so happy to finally catch a glimpse of the fall colors in Mt. Takao We always stumble upon this place, so we finally decided to step inside There is a lot of food! with many options besides japanese food We feel like having some fried chicken 🙂 So cool they have microwaves here! The chicken was really juicy! Warm, golden-brown pastry cooked in an iron mold Crispy outside and a sweet, red bean paste & cream cheese center This spot alone makes the Kamakura visit totally worth it ! We’re in central Kamakura and we are looking for some snacks Crispy, warm, and just the right amount of spicy There is always a queue here There isn’t that many left 🙁 Can’t be a Japan trip without matcha We’re at the mall, because the carer from the museum recommended a Manju shop They have anko and shiroan (white bean paste) They have so much filling! I think it is still time for coffee (it’s 8pm) This is what’s left This will do We came to Kichijoji, a Tokyo neighborhood This is charming little bakery known for its adorable Totoro-shaped cream puffs It’s officially licensed by Studio Ghibli and is the only place in the world where you can buy these Ghibli-themed treats We were looking for a matcha drink, and we found one pretty quickly The service here is amazing! everybody was so nice Let’s go back to the park We got two cream puffs this one has a chocolate cream filling Caramel banana cream filling We liked both 🙂 Starbucks Reserve Roastery offers a unique experience you won’t find at a regular Starbucks the building has a mix of sleek modern design and traditional Japanese touches Visiting is a really immersive experience There are only a few of this in the world There is an italian bakery All the food looks really tasty This coffee is brewed using the siphon method The tiramisu is really good too There is cocktail bar upstairs They get creative by incorporating coffee into cocktails We ordered the “Starbucks Reserve Espresso Martini” This coffee chain was founded in Brooklyn but has many locations in Tokyo We all ordered the maple latte We stopped by Gong Cha for a quick drink This is the world’s most popular bubble tea chain This one has a nice view of Shinjuku station We love the matcha milk tea with chewy tapioca pearls HARBS is a popular cake shop known for its fresh, handmade cakes They use high-quality ingredients, including fresh cream and seasonal fruits We’re walking towards the Gion area Because we want to go try traditional japanese sweets! This place offers a traditional japanese sweets experience You pour the tea over the ice So refreshing! It also has red bean paste! The warabimochi is hard to grip! because of its texture Once you dip it in the kinako (toasted soybean flour) it is easier to grip, and more delicious! This bi-level tavern offers a multi-course dinner Everything was prepared in front of us, as the restaurant boasts an open-kitchen concept We couldn’t read the description for each dish, but our waiter was kind enough to explain! The donabe rice pot comes at the end We’re always craving conveyor belt sushi! And this local chain did not disappoint Waiter was really nice and helped us choose! Your plates stack up quickly! we definitely had to try more unagi Glad it comes with instructions! We really enjoyed our unagi Time for steamed food! Menu is big! We went for package no. 3 You wait for your turn to take your food to the steaming section hot spring steamed food. They use natural steam from the hot springs to cook everything and you get to do it yourself! but don’t worry: they guide you along Actually quite healthy They have plenty of options, from japanese food to more western style dishes We’re huge fans of curry udon I mean… who doesn’t love the weird food combos you end up with at a buffet? Of course we had to grab some sashimi. There were many choices Dessert time! We ended up eating so many of these profiteroles We’re having a Kaiseki breakfast from our hotel in Beppu It consists of an appetizer, sashimi, a simmered dish, grilled fish and a steamed course Since we stayed 2 nights in Beppu, we had kaiseki there 2 days This is a great way to start the day! We could definitely get used to this Nattō beans are rich in micro and macronutrients! We not only had a kaiseki breakfast, we also had dinners! Particularly in our ryokan in Kurokawa Patiently waiting for our dinner, after enjoying the onsen Another traditional multi-course japanese dinner Each dish is carefully prepared and beautifully presented A kaiseki dinner starts with sakizuke, a small appetizer Using seasonal ingredients to highlight the flavor of the region, this is not just dinner, it’s an experience Then there’s hassun, a seasonal platter that sets the tone for the meal with a variety of small bites. Next is suimono, a delicate, clear soup, We also get takiawase, a simmered dish Tsukuri, which is fresh seasonal sashimi The Kyushu specialty is horse meat Then comes yakimono, a grilled dish—usually fish or meat. mushimono, a steamed dish like chawanmushi, a silky egg custard towards the end, we get gohan, miso soup, and pickles Finally, it all wraps up with mizugashi, a seasonal dessert like fruit, traditional sweets It’s such a beautifully balanced meal and a really unique dining experience! This dinner was special because it was our last one in Tokyo, and in Japan We were still craving Omurice This perfectly ends our 1 – month stay in Japan We definitely left the best for last! After one month, eight cities, more than 55 restaurants, and over 100 dishes… it’s safe to say Japan fed us well. And we’re still thinking about so many of those meals! I came across this channel because I was planning on a trip to Japan. I made note and took screen captures on the places and dishes I am interested and I would plan to visit them when we go to Japan. Thank you so much for sharing the videos.
I love how you categorize the kind of food in chapters.
By the way, subscribed!!!
You have great research skills 😊😊
You've tried every type of food in Japan 🤩 ‼️
But you've only known 10% of Japanese food 😂
Please come to Japan again 😘👋❤
