那覇市タイムスリップ(英語)
Many people have been traveling to and from Naha City since olden times. The city reached its current form after going through many events, including development of a transportation network and expansion of the administrative district. Let’s trace back its history from a bird’s eye view. [Music] This is Naha City in 2024. We’ll now jump back to olden times. [Music] This is a drawing of Naha during the Ryuku Kingdom era. It looks very different from the Naha we now know. Back then, Naha was a floating island across from Shuri. Bridges were built to connect this floating island to Shuri where Shuri Castle was. [Music] In the Maji period, Ryukyu annexation was carried out. The Ryuku Kingdom became Okinawa Prefecture and a prefectural government was installed in Naha. Naha became Naha Ward including Tomari, Kou and Kumoji. [Music] Later on, neighboring Makishi village and Kakinoana village were also merged into Naha Ward. In 1921, Naha Ward became Naha City as a result of municipal reorganization. Naha city further expanded by reclaiming land to create Nishimachi and Higashimachi. In the Taiisho period, both the port and a land transportation network for street cars, railways, and bus routes were developed. [Music] Before the war, the city was becoming modernized with various stores, including department stores as well as banks being built on the street and entertainment facilities like movie theaters opened. [Music] The growth of the city, however, seized with the arrival of the Pacific War. [Music] The battle of Okinawa was fought on land largely on the main island of Okinawa. In Naha, air raids and artillery attacks destroyed almost all the buildings from the Ryuku Kingdom era. [Music] Under US control after the Battle of Okinawa, ports and roads were developed and residential areas were reszoned. [Music] In 1954, Naha City merged with Shuri City and Oroku village. [Music] Then in 1957, it further merged with Mawashi city to become the current Naha city. Once Okinawa was returned to Japan in 1972, development of logistics and gateways in Naha accelerated, including expansion of Naha airport and Naha Newport Wararf, part of Naha Port. Also, city redevelopment after the return of land occupied by US military bases led to creation of new urban districts such as Naha Shintoshin. Naha continues to grow. In 2014, construction of the second runway began at Naha airport. In 2019, the UEI rail line was extended. [Music] Naha city developed into its current form where many people come and go after the area expansion by mergers and landfilling as well as development of the transportation network. How did you find the large changes in the landscape of Naha after the battle of Okinawa? [Music] It is now your turn to travel around the city and feel these changes. [Music]
