The idea of going to another country to travel without my family felt surreal to me at the time. The world was just the US, Canada and India right? I don’t remember exactly why I chose to start studying Japanese in middle school; might have been another dumb decision teenage me made in approximately 10 mins to make me different to everyone else taking Spanish or French. Somehow, through all the Kanji packets, time spent memorizing vocab, and messing around during class (sorry sensei), I never stopped and made it to J4. In my mind, Japan was this utopia of lush nature, steaming ramen bowls under hole in the wall restaurants, and punctual very packed trains. The thought of walking around all the neon cyberpunk style streets at night, temples and shrines, and open green rice paddies slept deep in my dreams for a couple years. That’s when I heard about the Japan trip and the homestay program. Suddenly, I realized the seemingly distant idea may be closer than it appears. They say dreams fade at sunrise, when you wake up. Mine boarded a plane to Tokyo Haneda Airport.

  1. So glad I can say I experienced Japan with you, Karthik. For the last time, this Japan trip, this video, was, undeniably, freaking tuff…
