Buses to Bullet Trains, Getting Around Japan | Tokyo to Toyama
[Music] oh I’m leaving someone hey everyone today we are headed to Toyama it’s a cute little trolley we’ve never been there before this is our very first time and we’re super excited all right stay tuned [Music] all right we have to hurry because we have to catch a bus to get to our Shinkansen which is like a bullet train super fast train we have a hotel all on points we’ll tell you more about that later and yeah we have no idea what we’re going to do while we’re there we haven’t even researched the place yet we haven’t researched Toyama yet but we just had to get out of our house that our host unexpectedly came home so we are taking advantage of the situation my hair is crazy we ran out of there it’s heavy shouldn’t be for 2 days but it is yeah we’ll catch up with you once we get to the train station let’s [Music] go if you’re just catching up with us this is my husband Steven and I’m Elaine we are full-time travelers currently housesitting in the beautiful hills of Hayyama and today we are traveling to Toyama Sushi Station [Music] since we’re on this train for over an hour we’re going to be good foreigners and put our bags up here so as we mentioned we’re headed up to Toyama Japan it’s up in the north right outside of Toyama Bay that leads into the Sea of Japan we can’t wait where we’re going today takes us 4 hours on the train but it’s an additional 2 hours by car so even if you have a car and live in Japan it’ll be better to take the train to go where we’re going today let’s get to Toyama all right [Music] what is [Music] it it was a total of 13 stops or a one-hour ride to Tokyo Station where we bought tickets and caught the very next Shinkansen to [Music] Toyama over the next 2 hours and 12 minutes I did some editing and we enjoyed the beautiful mountain views out the [Music] window just before arriving in Toyama we took a quick tour of the beautiful and super clean Japanese Shinkansen [Music] bathrooms this is nice there’s a sink there and there’s a sink there so that’s the door which latches you can see then this is the lock it’s got braille instructions that’s cool million different options flushing even on the train you get a fancy toilet all right [Music] all right we made it to our hotel the Ana Crown Plaza but first I want to tell you about our crazy bus ride if I look a little disheveled it’s because when we got on the bus our Suica cards did not work luckily some nice people let us know to take these tickets and we paid cash which is why you should always have yen available in Japan because you just never know around here also we did have to pay more our car didn’t work when we tried to go from the like the city train to the JR line [Music] [Music] so we had to pay more money anyway we’re going to see what happened there and then try to explain that cuz we’re not even sure what happened but for now let’s go check in kawaii this is the deal checks out the room we have two beds i accidentally only booked one person uh-oh maybe they are these look like singles not doubles we might have to cuddle real close and then we can see the castle yeah yeah yeah this is our view [Music] speaking of beautiful views we were starving and went directly upstairs for some libations and [Music] nosh see you tomorrow [Music] so let me explain a little bit about why we left our houseit our houseit was supposed to be for 5 months there was an initial 3we period in August we had a great time then then things changed we went to Singapore we loved that adorable Rupert we had a great time and then we were supposed to just stay here for five months however that hasn’t really worked out unfortunately things change all the time when you’re working with the military and that has happened with us even though Steven’s retired now the gal that we’re housesitting for is in the Navy so we’re back to that military life of not knowing what or when she just got back home and we are taking off for the weekend we are going to come back and forth for the next few weeks to help take care of the dog cuz she has some long shifts and it’s an overnight duty different things like that and we want to make sure that little Peppy Chan is taken very good care of that’s our number one priority always so we’re going to do that and then on the weekends we’re going to go on little adventures this is the first one so we’re excited so yeah we’re sitting for a 12-year-old corgi who also survived cancer and an ice scratch at 12 years old the most adorable puppy named Pebbles she’s absolutely wonderful we love taking care of her elaine editing on a housesit having breakfast you know Japanese life but every now and then everyone needs a break so we’re going to take this break for us a little vacation and we get to we get to be the customers heavy Chan is adorable but she definitely knows she’s the customer so in this case we get to go to a hotel and we get to be pampering be free with [Music] me let’s go [Music]
🚅 Join us on our weekend escape to Toyama! Buses, Trains, Shinkansen…Oh my! We take ALL types of public transportation in Japan…and it doesn’t all go seamlessly. 😅
We’re off again! After house-sitting in Hayama for the world’s most lovable corgi (Pebbles, you’re the real MVP 🐾), we packed our bags and headed north for a 3-day weekend in Toyama, Japan!
Getting there wasn’t exactly smooth sailing—our trusty Suica cards failed us on the bus and the Shinkansen (oops 😅). But after navigating local trains, buses, and high-speed rail, we finally arrived at the ANA Crowne Plaza—only to discover our last travel hiccup: Elaine booked us… single beds. 😬
No worries—we made up for it with stunning skyline views, happy hour cocktails, and that “we made it!” travel high.
Tomorrow we hit the streets of Toyama to see what this underrated gem has to offer!

We have been working and traveling the world together since 2016. We have decided to “risk it all”! We quit our jobs, sold our cas and are hoping to ‘live like locals’ as vagabonds traveling the world. To record and share our experiences with family & friends we are creating these short videos from our travels. We hope you enjoy!

Things don't always go as planned…especially on travel days. Overall, it was an easy day and we can't wait to explore Toyama!
