It rained. Of course it rained—right after Maya left her hostel without checking the weather. She ducked under a storefront to wait it out.
An elderly woman, no English, handed her a pink umbrella with tiny bunnies printed on it. Maya tried to refuse. The woman just smiled, gently pushed the handle into her hand, and walked away in the rain without one.
