Have you visited Shibamata in Tokyo? #japantravel #explorejapan #reels
I don’t think people know that you can literally go back in time in this city in Tokyo. This is Shiba Mata and unlike the hyperdeveloped Tokyo you’re probably thinking of, the vibes here are a blast from the past. You can check out an old candy shop selling old school Japanese snacks. And after that, head to the main shopping street to pick up some Japanese pickles called Skimono or some freshly grilled sbe rice crackers. My pick though is this grass mochi. I know it sounds weird, but it’s topped with beans and has a pleasant, slightly bitter flavor. The shopping street will lead you to Taiishaken Temple, which was built almost 400 years ago. You can stroll through the tranquil temple grounds and take a quick breather cuz after that you have to find this tempura shop. They’re serving up crispy fried shrimp tempura dubba bowls. The shrimp was almost as big as my head. If you’ve done Shinjuku and Chibi already, add Shiba Mata to your next Japan trip
Have you ever heard of Shibamata? 🇯🇵
Shibamata is located in eastern Tokyo, a little under an hour away from Shinjuku. You can feel the old school Edo vibes here everywhere from the shops, to the sights, to the restaurants 🏯
It’s one of my favorite underrated spots in Tokyo and is definitely worth visiting for the afternoon. Try the grass dango at “Toraya” and the tempura at “Yamatoya.” Who are you visiting here with? 🍡
