Don’t know what you are talking about. Let’s just take for granted that you wouldn’t care much about Spec R Spec S originality, a spec S is roughly 10-15k with a sr20de maybe 20k ish for a sr20det. If you’re from northern US you have it even easier if you plan to purchase one in Canada. If not, they are dime dozen from Japan. Though inspection and trusting the seller is a different story, you can get a s15 much cheaper than the typical supra, gr86, 400z, CTR.
Of course, if you’re talking about getting a daily driver, then no, I wouldn’t recommend a s15 as a daily drive unless you have something else way more reliable. I can’t imagine not being able to go to work because s chassis things. The price of these s15 are only load of shit if it’s shipped to the US already. That’s including the expensive broker fee and transportation and whatever fees they decide to charge ontop for a premium.
Give or take, save up to 20k or finance one. S15’s latest year is 2002, meaning they can’t can’t really be imported till 2027, meaning it’ll be cheaper than the ones that’s already available in the state side. All my friends that I know of including myself have obtained a s15 for less than 20k already. Some are Spec R some are Spec S, end of the day it’s a clean s15 with manual trans.
P-sychotic
Considering you can only import the 1999 and some 2000 models (so far at least) under the 25 year rule, just spitballing here, but one potential way would be engaging a broker to buy one from Japan that isn’t currently legal for import and have it stored in Japan until it is legal under the 25 year rule.
The other options would be importing from other countries like here in Aus or New Zealand.
Though not sure I’ve really seen a lot of them for sale in Aus.
If you’re handy with tools and ready for (potentially extremely) hard work, can always import a really neglected one that you can fix up, but considering you’ve stipulated you’re broke that’s probably not a very viable decision either.
But as less and less good examples are left in the world over time the price is just going to continue to go up regardless unfortunately.
Damn this car brings back memories of a car we used to roll with back in the day in Va

my s15 was just over 15k all in. not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things, and realistically if you have $1500-3000 you can get a loan for the rest.
granted, mines not a perfect condition low mileage spec R aero, it’s someone else’s project with a bodykit, wheels, intake, stickers, etc etc but it’s a daily drifter so idc about any of that. slapped some new wheels and a bigass turbo (and injectors, exhaust, lights, etc) on it, stripped the interior, and full sent it. still going strong a year later.

Spec S cost less than a BRZ lol, just work more. You’ve probably got 2 years before prices on 2002s rise, and even then they’ll just rise to match other Spec S, which are cheap.
Spec Rs have gone up a lot already and cost around what a GR86 does, but that’s literally the cheapest sports car on sale today so they aren’t that bad either.

No. You’re broke. Owning a nice car while being broke leads to being even more broke. Excellent question though. /s

Things like this at 21 are the PERFECT way to set goals and work toward them. Whatever you’re doing, getting your S15 will fuel your daily fire to keep going to keep growing. Tbh, that’s the only way to “realistically” obtain anything in life

Not anymore. If you had been 21 a decade ago, and not in America, then maybe.
I’m turning my NB Miata into a baby S15 though, and I love it lol
