We had a 2008, and I removed the pocket at the top between the AC vents, and put a Sony XA-1000 headunit in the top space. I then connected the Sony preamp output into the aux input on the factory headunit. This is where the optional factory GPS setup goes. This way I still had the factory CD changer/mini disk and the steering wheel buttons all still worked.
If you want to keep the small readout with fuel consumption/outdoor temp etc, the model with GPS has an alternative part that puts it down below the stereo.
The questionable part is that there’s a structural bar across behind that pocket, so you can’t have a traditional double din headunit in the top part, the Sony one I mentioned is single DIN at the back, which fits around the cross member alright.

Crutchfield most likely has one
