The torch to be used for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay has been designed with a cherry blossom motif – a flower close to the hearts of all Japanese people. The concept of the relay is ‘Hope Lights Our Way’ with the torch traversing the length and breadth of Japan🌸
The cherry blossom motif of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic torch has been manufactured by the traditional method of aluminum extrusion, a technique that is also used in the production of the Shinkansen ‘bullet’ train 🚅
Also, part of the material from which the Olympic torch is composed of, is recycled aluminum, that was originally used in the construction of temporary housing units during the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
