The Twisted Tree Walkthrough

After unlocking this quest, new objectives will appear on the objectives board, each one corresponding to a Twisted Tree member. You’ll have their names, but not their appearances or exact locations.

To find the members, you’ll need to gather intel by completing a series of optional sub-quests. Below, you’ll find a list of all optional quests and how to complete them.

Subquest #1 – Talk to the Merchant

The Twisted Tree1.1.png

How to Unlock: Talk to Ujimasa during the quest Inside Help

You will find the merchant in a non-hostile area west of Nijo Palace in the big city of Kyoto, which is found in Yamashiro—the region north of Izumi Settsu and east of Harima. The game provides you with several clues to help track down this merchant:

He is in Central Kyoto, Yamashiro He was seen west of Nijo Palace He stands near an umbrella cart

The Twisted Tree 2.png

To find the merchant, travel to the Nijo Tenshu viewpoint and head west until you find him, next to an umbrella cart.

The Twisted Tree1.3.png

Approach him to talk. He’ll reveal that the Twisted Tree is a corrupt family. This information will update the Twisted Tree objective board to add the missing members.

The Twisted Tree1.4.png

During this cutscene, you’ll also have a dialogue option:

“Saburo is boasting.” “He could be dangerous.”

Regardless of which one you choose, he will tell you that you should talk to a family guard who might have more information.

Subquest #2 – Guard Assignments How to Unlock: Talk to the merchant in Kyoto

Familyguard.png

The family guard is in a non-hostile east of Honnoji Temple, in the big city of Kyoto, which is found in Yamashiro—the region north of Izumi Settsu and east of Harima. The game provides you with several clues to help track down this guard:

He is in eastern Kyoto, Yamashiro He can be found east of Honnoji Temple He was seen near a sake crate cart

The Twisted Tree1.6.png

To find the family guard, locate Honnoji Temple, which is in Kyoto, southwest of Nijo Palace. Head east and you’ll find the guard dead on the streets, next to a sake crate cart.

The Twisted Tree1.7.png

Even though the guard is dead, you can loot his body to collect intel on the Twisted Tree. Doing so will reveal a crucial piece of information: if the head of the Twisted Tree is dead, the siblings will avenge him.

Show Spoilers With the information you have so far, you can dispatch a scout west of Honnoji Temple, in Kyoto, to find the location of Takahashi Inoshichi, the head of this clan.

If you kill him right away, the next two optional quests will be automatically completed. However, doing this will automatically spare two siblings, Takahashi Goro and Takahashi Ichi-Hime. While there are no consequences to sparing them, you won’t get all quest rewards for killing them.

For this walkthrough, we will continue explaining how to complete the other subquest as well as how to find each sibling.

After looting the dead guard’s body, you’ll get a new objective: to listen in on the guards who might spill some information on the Twisted Tree.

Subquest #3 – Family Drama How to get: Complete Guard Assignments

The Twisted Tree1.8.png

You will find these guards just outside the entrance to the Imperial Palace, an area south of Shokokuji Temple in Kyoto, Yamashiro. The game provides you with several clues to help track down these guards:

They are in northern Kyoto They are north of the Imperial Palace They were seen in front of an entrance

The Twisted Tree1.9.png

If you have a scout available, dispatch it south of Shokokuji Temple to reveal this objective’s marker. If you can’t, set a map pointer on the Imperial Palace and use the pathfinder to get there.

Once outside the Imperial Palace’s entrance, move towards the guards and stay behind the bamboo fence. From that position, press L2 on the PlayStation or LT on the Xbox controllers to listen in on the guards.

The Twisted Tree1.10.png

You’ll learn that one of the guards dropped a note containing information on Jiro’s new patrol path.

Loot The Note

This note is inside a building in Kyoto known as the Furo of Kyoto. The game provides plenty of clues to help you find this note:

It is in central Kyoto, Yamashiro It is north of Kano Painting School It was seen inside the Furo of Kyoto

The Twisted Tree1.11.png

The Furo of Kyoto is north of Kano Painting School, west of Nijo Palace, and south of Asukai Clan Domain. When you get there, turn left to go inside.

The Twisted Tree1.12.png

You’ll find the note in a corner, on the floor.

The Twisted Tree1.13.png

After obtaining this note, go to the objectives board to track the next subquest, Dropped Intel. During this one, you’ll have to go to an area in Kyoto where Shiro had an outburst with a fan merchant and search the area to gather clues of his whereabouts.

Subquest #4 – Dropped Intel How to unlock: Complete Family Drama

The Twisted Tree1.14.png

The outburst location is southwest of Nijo Palace, on the street below the Nijo Tenshu Viewpoint. The game provides some clues to help you find this location:

It is in central Kyoto, Yamashiro It is along Nijo Palace’s moat It was witnessed near a broken cart

The Twisted Tree1.15.png

When you get there, investigate the broken fan cart to loot a note containing information on Shiro’s location.

The Twisted Tree1.16.png

A new optional quest will be unlocked now: Return to Sender.

Subquest #5 – Return to Sender How to unlock: Complete Dropped Intel

During this quest, you’ll have to find the letter that an old family caregiver gave to Jiro.

Loot the Caregiver’s Letter

The letter is on the ground, south of Honnoji Temple. The game provides some clues to help you find this letter:

It is in southern Kyoto, Yamashiro It was seen south of Honnoji Temple It is on the ground on the main street

The Twisted Tree1.39.png

To find this letter, look for Honnoji Temple in southern Kyoto, Yamashiro, and then head south. When you get there, you’ll spot this letter on the ground, just north of the Ornament Vendor. Loot the papers on the floor to get the letter.

The Twisted Tree1.40.png

This letter reveals that the two younger siblings are different from their brothers. Hinting that you could spare them, but more on that later.

Now that you have enough intel on each Twisted Tree member, you can hunt them down one by one.

How to find Takahashi Shiro

Takahashi Shiro is inside Nijo Palace, a hostile location in Kyoto. You’ll find him a little north of the Nijo Tenshu Viewpoint. The game provides useful clues to help you locate Takahashi Shiro:

He is in central Kyoto, Yamashiro He is located in Nijo Palace He will avenge his father’s death

The Twisted Tree1.17.png

The quickest way to find Takahashi Shiro is to fast-travel to the Nijo Tenshu Viewpoint.

The Twisted Tree1.18.png

Then drop down to walk way on the left, the one with an archer.

The Twisted Tree1.19.png

Quickly deal with the archer by striking him repeatedly with fast or heavy attacks. This will alert nearby enemies, but that’s exactly what we want because Takahashi Shiro will come up to fight you.

Defeating Shiro

Shiro is a big enemy who will strike using two unstoppable attacks in a row. Dodge those at the right time to leave him vulnerable and strike back.

The Twisted Tree1.20.png

Be careful where you dodge, you’ll be fighting in a very narrow area, and there’s a chance you might fall into the water that surrounds the castle. If you want, you can use the ladder there to bring the fight to the lower level.

The Twisted Tree1.21.png

However, this is a hostile area, so if you go down there’s a chance more enemies will arrive and overwhelm you.

The Power Dash ability is also super useful to leave him vulnerable. If there are other enemies nearby, kill them to replenish your adrenaline tokens so you can keep performing ability attacks.

After defeating Shiro, you can move on to the next sibling.

Assassinating Takahashi Shiro will get you the following rewards:

Taro can be found training in the Asukai Clan Domain, a non-hostile area north of Furo of Kyoto in Kyoto, Yamashiro. The game provides some clues to help you find him:

He is in western Kyoto, Yamashiro He trains in the Asukai Clan Domain He will avenge his father’s death

The Twisted Tree1.22.png

You can dispatch a scout in the Asukai Clan Domain to reveal the quest marker. If you can’t, place a marker on the Asukai Clan Domain and use the pathfinder to navigate the area. When you get there, you’ll find Taro in the training grounds.

The Twisted Tree1.23.png

Tip: When looking for a target, press L2 on the PlayStation or LT on the Xbox controllers and look around to mark the current target.

Approach Taro slowly and press the assassinate button. He will survive the attempt, but at least you’ll deal the first blow.

Taro1.png

Taro is smaller than Shiro, but he is still a formidable foe. He can block your attacks and strike back using an unstoppable attack. When you see the red glow in his weapon, dodge at the right time to leave him vulnerable. Then strike back.

Taroredglow.png

He can also perform an attack that you can parry. When you see the white circle on his weapon, press the parry button to avoid getting hurt.

Tarowhitecircle.png

Use the Power Dash ability to drain his health bar faster, this will also leave him vulnerable, allowing you to strike back. Since there are no enemies nearby, you won’t be able to farm them to replenish your adrenaline tokens faster.

Assassinating Takahashi Taro will get you the following rewards:

After defeating Takahashi Taro, move on to Takahashi Shiburo. He is closest to Taro’s position.

How to Find Takahashi Saburo

Saburo is near the Asakai Clan Domain, southwest of where Taro was. The game provides the following clues to help you find him:

He is in western Kyoto, Yamashiro He was seen arguing with Takahashi Taro He will avenge his father’s death

The Twisted Tree1.24.png

To find Takahashi Saburo, exit the Asakai Clan Domain and head to the southwest corner of the outer wall. There, you’ll spot Saburo facing a wall with a big guard behind him. Move slowly towards his position and press the “Brutal Assassinate” button.

The Twisted Tree1.25.png

This will alert the guard behind him, but you can get away easily by running away if you don’t want to engage in a fight.

Assassinating Takahashi Taro will get you the following rewards:

With Saburo dead, you can move on to the next target.

How to Find Takahashi Jiro

Takahashi Jiro is in Kyoto, Yamashiro. You’ll find him south of Honnoji temple and east of the southern Kyoto Kakurega. The game provides the following clues to help you find Jiro:

He is in Southern Kyoto, Yamashiro He patrols south of Honnoji Temple He will avenge his father’s death

The Twisted Tree1.29.png

To find Takahashi Jiro, fast-travel to the southern Kyoto Kakurega and go outside. Turn left, away from the entrance to Toji Temple.

Taro1.jpg

When you see the rice fields on your left, look by pressing L2 on the PlayStation controller. You’ll spot Takahashi Jiro behind the fields, near a guard.

The Twisted Tree1.30.png

Approach Takahashi Jiro from behind and press the assassinate button. He will survive the attempt, but you’ll still take a good chunk out of his health bar.

Jiro 3.png

Takahashi Jiro attacks with a kick that you can’t parry. When you see a red glow forming around his foot, dodge to avoid taking damage. If you do this at the right time, you’ll leave him vulnerable, leaving you with a small window to land some attacks.

Jirored.png

During this fight, make sure to use the Power Dash ability to leave him vulnerable, then strike back. There’s a guard next to Jiro that you can attack using light attacks to replenish your adrenaline.

Jiro vulnerable.png

When he recovers, dodge when you see the red glow to avoid the unstoppable attack he performs with his sword.

Jiro red 2.png

Sometimes he also performs an attack with his sword, but you’ll see the white circle, so you can parry this one.

Assassinating Takahashi Jiro will get you the following rewards:

How to Find Takahashi Ichi-hime

Takahashi Ichi-hime is in Umenomiya Taisha Shrine, a non-hostile area in Kyoto, Yamashiro. The game provides the following clues to track her down:

She is in western Kyoto, Yamashiro She was seen at Umenomiya Taisha Shrine She will be free if her father dies

The Twisted Tree1.26.png

To find Takahashi Ichi-hime, dispatch a scout southwest of Kano Painting School. If you don’t have one available, place a marker on the undiscovered location southwest of Kano Painting School and head there.

The Twisted Tree1.27.png

When you get there, you’ll find Ichi-hime in the garden, next to a tree. If you approach her and talk to her, you’ll be given the option to kill or spare her. Sparing her will still work towards completing this mission.

If you choose to fight, get close and press the Assassinate button to deal the first blow and leave her weaker.

The Twisted Tree1.28.png

Ichi-hime has two attacks, she can strike with a Flurry Attack, where she swings her sword three times in a row. These attacks can be parried, so when you see the blue light on her weapon, be ready to quickly parry three times, then you’ll have a small window to strike back.

Ichiflurry.png

Sometimes she performs one attack using her sword. You’ll know she is about to perform this one because a white circle appears on her weapon. These are the ones you should try to parry at the right time to leave her vulnerable.

Ichiwhite.png

Finally, she can perform two unstoppable attacks, one with her sword and the other with a kicking attack.

Ichired.png

With these ones make sure to dodge out of the way as soon as you see the red glow to avoid getting hurt.

Assassinating or sparing Takahashi Ichi-hime will get you the following rewards:

Takahashi Goro is near the Shokokuji Pagoda Viewpoint in Kyoto, Yamashiro. The game provides some clues to help you find him:

He is in northern Kyoto, Yamashiro He was seen in Shokokuji Temple He will be free if his father dies

The Twisted Tree1.41.png

To find Takahashi Goro, fast-travel to the Shokokuji Pagoda Viewpoint and perform a Leap of Faith to drop down.

Leap.jpg

As soon as you get on the ground, you’ll spot Takahashi Goro to your right, outside a building.

Goro2.png

Unlike his siblings, Goro wasn’t trained in the art of combat, so all you have to do to kill him is approach and press the Brutally Assassinate button.

You could also spare him by looking at him and selecting that option.

Assassinating or sparing Takahashi Goro will get you the following rewards:

Tap to Reveal Tap to Reveal Tap to Reveal Tap to RevealHow to Find Takahashi Inoshichi

Takahashi Inoshichi is in a hostile area in southern Kyoto, Yamashiro. To find him, dispatch a scout west of Honnoji Temple and north of Toji Temple. If there aren’t available scouts, place a marker there and head in that direction. The game provides some clues to help you find him:

He is in southern Kyoto, Yamashiro The garden has a secret entrance

The Twisted Tree1.31.png

While stealth is where Naoe shines, we recommend you approach this target with a stealthy strategy.

Takahashi Inoshichi is inside a house in this area. Sure, you could go inside straight away and kill him, but as soon as the fight starts, all the nearby guards will come rushing to defend him and overwhelm you. Instead of doing that, we recommend you enter through the secret entrance and kill some of the guards outside, then go inside and assassinate Inoshichi.

To do that, head to the southeast corner wall of the area where Takahashi Inoshichi is located.

The Twisted Tree1.32.png

There, you’ll see a secret entrance on one of the walls.

The Twisted Tree1.33.png

Crouch to get in, and look to your right. There you’ll see two archers behind the crates to your right.

The Twisted Tree1.34.png

Kill them quickly using light or heavy attacks. This will attract the attention of two NPCs that are outside the doors to the house in the middle. If you hide to get out of their sight, you won’t raise any alarms.

Stay hidden and whistle using the D-pad down button to attract the attention of nearby enemies, this will allow you to kill them away from other enemies’ sight.

Now move and kill the two guards by this area’s entrance.

The Twisted Tree1.35.png

There are a couple more guards in this area, but you can leave them alone. Now, go inside the structure in the center.

The Twisted Tree1.36.png

Open the doors to find Inoshichi praying on the floor. Approach him and press the assassinate button to deal the first blow.

The Twisted Tree1.38.png

During this fight, you have to keep an eye out for his unstoppable attacks. He has two: one where he performs an unstoppable kick and another one where he uses his sword. With both of these you have to dodge to avoid getting hurt.

Inored.png

Since you killed the guards outside before finding Inoshichi, it’s safe to lure the enemy outside the house. This will give you more room to dodge or parry attacks.

Inoshichi can also attack with a Flurry Attack where he performs three strikes in a row using his sword. When you see the blue light appear around his weapon, get ready to parry three times; this should leave him vulnerable.

Inoflurry.png

When you see that his health bar is low enough, perform the Power Dash ability to finish him off.

Assassinating Takahashi Inoshichi will get you the following rewards:

Tap to Reveal Tap to Reveal Tap to Reveal Tap to Reveal Tap to Reveal Tap to Reveal Tap to Reveal Tap to Reveal Tap to RevealShould You Spare or Kill the Two Youngest Siblings?

During this quest, you’ll have the option to kill or spare Takahashi Ichi-hime and Takahashi Goro. The Inside Help Quest is completed either way, and you’ll get the same rewards for killing or sparing the siblings.

After dealing with all Twisted Tree members the quest will end. You can now return to Ujimasa to complete the quest Inside Help.

Completing The Twisted Tree Mission will reward you with 5,000 XP.
