Horse Dance Festival of Kagoshima, Japan! 初午祭 Hatsuuma Festival. Explore Make Art.

Hey there, in this video I’m visiting one of my favorite festivals in southern Japan, The Hatsuuma Festival! Also, known as the horse dancing or prancing event! The Hatsuuma Festival (初午祭), particularly at Kagoshima Jingu Shrine, is a vibrant and historically rich event. Here’s a breakdown of what makes it special:
• Historical Significance:
o The festival boasts a history spanning over 460 years.
o It has roots in agricultural traditions, with prayers for good harvests and the health of livestock.
o It also has ties to the founding of Kagoshima Jingu, and stories of divine horses.
• Key Features:
o Suzu-kake Uma (Bells-Adorned Horses): A defining element is the presence of elaborately decorated horses. These “Suzu-kake Uma” are adorned with bells, mirrors, and artificial flowers, creating a visually stunning spectacle.
o Dance Groups: The festival involves energetic dance groups from local districts, who perform in colorful costumes. These groups move in unison with the Suzu-kake Uma, creating a dynamic and lively atmosphere.
o Kagoshima Jingu Shrine: The festival takes place at Kagoshima Jingu Shrine in Kirishima City, a significant cultural and historical site.
o The festival is held annually on February.
• Cultural Importance:
o It’s a traditional event that reflects the region’s strong connection to agriculture and Shinto beliefs.
o The festival is a major cultural event in Kagoshima Prefecture, attracting many spectators.
o It is a time to pray for good health, good crops, and the health of animals.
In essence, the Hatsuuma Festival in Kagoshima is a dynamic blend of tradition, religious significance, and vibrant cultural expression.
