June 12, 2006 Day 05: Niigata

Niigata is the capital city of Niigata Prefecture and is a major port city for trade and tourism along the Japan Sea coast of Japan. It is also the base for tours to Sado Island, a former penal colony and site for the country’s gold mines. The easiest way to see Niigata’s historic district is to ride the Loop Bus. An inexpensive day pass permits you to get on and off to visit the many attractions along the bus’ route.
