The three primary places you can exchange your home currency for Japanese Yen are (1) local banks, (2) airport currency exchanges, (3) Japanese ATMs. There are other methods, such as automated machines at the airport, but this is really just an extension of the above options.

There are pros and cons no matter what you choose, so you might find that a combination of them is the best solution.
