The name Sandanbeki originates from its unique three-tiered cliff structure. The entire cliff stands 50 meters high, facing the Pacific Ocean, where waves continuously crash against the steep rock walls, creating thunderous roars. Standing on the observation deck at the top of the cliff, you can overlook the vast Pacific, where the deep blue sea merges with the distant horizon, forming a spectacular natural landscape.
In addition to the stunning cliff views, the Sandanbeki Cave is also worth a visit, though it requires a separate ticket. From the visitor center, an elevator takes you more than 30 meters down to the base of the cliff, leading to this mysterious seaside cave. It is said that this cave once served as a secret base for Japan’s ancient Kumano navy, who used the natural barriers of Sandanbeki to engage in battle. Inside the cave, traces of the navy’s operations are still preserved, giving visitors a sense of traveling through history.
Within the cave, not only can you hear the tremendous echo of the waves crashing against the walls, but you can also visit a shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of the sea. Sailors would pray to her before setting out to sea, seeking safety and favorable winds. The cave also exhibits historical artifacts related to the Kumano navy, showcasing the maritime battles of that era.
